Guest Anonymous
They could have tourists come on bus trips from all over the world to visit the bus shelter.
Yowe
What about all those people who applied to live on Fair Isle? Most of them could be put on Unst instead. It's just as good.
Njugle
Yeah, they could, but what would they all do? Here's an interesting one though. Give economically declining areas like Unst a 'true broadband' uplink to a satellite of 8meg+ and you could have the ecommerce and call centre people queuing up! That's gotta cost less than a tunnel? Then...put a tidal generation barrier across bluemull sound and that combined with their 'hydrogen' powered electric cars, and they'd be laughing! Free intra-island transport, free housing, superb infrastructure.! When i rule the world........
Yowe
Great ideas Njugle, it all sounds quite feasable. Any idea what all those people were planning to do on Fair Isle?

Guest Anonymous
I think Unst and Yell should be closed as soon as possible to save the taxpayers money. Lets be honest, both Isles are a drain on the councils resourses and the majority of Shetland folk would like to see the back of them. For years the ferries heading back to these Isles have been ferrying contraband stolen from the honest, hardworking people from the mainland. Would it be possible to do a "deal" with the EU to send these criminals to Hungary or somewhere like that.
JustMe
Ok then, lets produce a reasoned cost benefit analysis to support the notion that Shetland, Orkney and the Western Isles should be abandoned and the inhabitants moved to the slum housing estates in N.E. England. Since statistics can be used to "prove" just about anything that should not be too hard. Then again we could all sit down and think what could be done to help both islands recover.....I still think housing asylum seekers in the former RAF houses would be good as it would help the local shops and the school and I am sure genuine asylum seekers would welcome the chance to live in Unst. Who in their right mind would want to stay in Unst. I'm sure any asylum seeking Eastern European would gladly pay their way back home if they were to spend a fortnight in the place.Whats more , they could spread the word to their migrating comrades and it might stop the hordes of furry hatted ex-communist fish factory employees flooding the Country. JustMe
Who in their right mind would want to live on Unst?. I guess someone with a different set of values to you. Well thats ok. We are all entitled to our opinions. And I believe that given a free choice between a Glasgow tower block or an ex RAF house in Unst genuine asylum seekers might well choose Unst. As for the ex communist hordes working in the fish factories then if they come from one of the new batch of EU countries then they are entitled to work in the UK. If on the other hand they are illegal ecconomic migrants perhaps working for a so called "gangmaster" then the employer is at fault for not checking on their status. While on the subject did you notice the recent adverts in the Shetland Times offering to supply local firms with skilled labour.

Guest Anonymous
Just an idea but how about a brothel it could employ fine local lasses and use some of those empty buildings the RAF have helpfully left behind. 8O
peeriebryan
More redundancies in Unst This article on the Shetland News website claims that "Problems in the salmon industry" have caused Alexander Sandison & Sons (which runs a shop, talc quarry, haulage/construction business and a hatchery) to 'call in the administrators' and pay off four staff at the Quoys hatchery. However, this BBC article claims that 'the island's fish farming businesses are expanding.' It's good to see that Belmont Trust has got £335,000 to renovate Belmont House, as this will provide jobs for 'six skilled craftsmen' over two years and two full time jobs when complete, according to this article on the Shetland News website
Njugle
Hot off the airwaves! A developer called Frank Strang has been announced as the preferred bidder for the former RAF base. He has already purchased and developed other former military bases elsewhere in Sctoland, i presume successfully. He has already had talks with blackwoods and otherwise hope to develop commercial units and a holiday destination. It struck me in his interview that he didn't actually allude as to how to get these tourists to visit Unst, but did say that he hoped to make Unst a widely known destination on the UK market. peeriebryan
Here's an article from the Shetland News website about Frank Strang's bid Partnership could salvage Saxa Vord I wonder what he's planning to do with the place
NewMagnie
Other than letting out the old MT buildings as industrial units to Blackwoods, there's not a lot else you can do with the place - it's mostly accomodation blocks and houses. You could use them for hotels or self catering but that would just knock the ass out of the existing tourist trade. If you put the houses on the open market all you'd do is plunge the rest of the island into negative equity. The buildings on the top of the hill would need to attract some pretty specialist users. If I were a deeply cynical man (as opposed to just a cynical one) I'd be inclined to suspect that buying up bases in Buchan and Saxavord might be loss leaders for getting oneself onto the bidding list for choicer MoD proprties in, say, the south of England.
