peeriebryan
Does anyone know why there is such huge variations between the prices of flights to Shetland? Does BA just pull numbers out of a hat?
Distortio
no, the hat wasn't random enough. they now spend 3 weeks rounding up stray cats and dogs, attach a number to each of them and crank them all full of methamphetamine before letting them loose in the crowded airport lounge at peak time. CCTV cameras capture the ensuing mayhem from several different angles, and are used to determine the number of people knocked over in the chaos. that number is then multiplied by the sum total of the numbers attached to animals which actually caused a fall (slippages are not counted), then the total is divided by the number of ambulances attending the scene. and that figure gives you your quoted fare for a given day. peeriebryan
get the boat, £10.50.Indeed. They won't let me take my bass as hand luggage on the plane. Have you ever seen how the baggage handlers treat your luggage
Njugle
get the boat, £10.50.Yeah 10.50 to get on, 20.50 to get off again, 30.50 for a sandwich and a floor to sleep on. NEVER! unless i have to due to unpredictably high air fairs! Ahem. To give them credit, the current online booking facility does include all taxes etc, and lets you see the cheapest days. Something that might provide a partial answer to the original question, when i flew south in january for £55 pound each way, there was 3 people on the outbound and six on the return. When i looked again recently the only time the similar fare was available was to leave friday return monday, off peak in a business sense, which didn't suit my requirements but it's nice to be offered anyway, and i could choose the next best price. Yeah, i know, i just resent all that preparation for 12 hours of misery. I have had excellent nights on th boat, but few and far between. Don't think i take enough stugeron though An inflatable matress would be cool though. Think you'd get away with that? What i'd love to know is how to get the ultra-comfy couches in oh-so quiet reception, how do those backpackers always get there first? Are they german? Do they "towel" the seats before the boat arrives?

turrifield
The boat does have a few beds that you can sleep on if you don't want to martyr yourself to some floor sleeping nort boat god.

Are they german? Do they "towel" the seats before the boat arrives? No matter what time you're on the boat, those oh-so-comfy looking sofas are occupied. There must be something in a travel book about it. How do they know? I once strolled through from the bar at about midnight and found one unoccupied. I couldn't believe my luck and nabbed it immediately. It was tremendous, much comfier than the beds.
peeriebryan
..........onywye Does anyone know why there's such huge differences in the price of flights.....?
JustMe
Supply and demand.....greater the demand the higher the price for a particular flight. Then there are all the people wanting a profit out of each traveller. British Airways for the use of their booking system, Loganair for providing the plane, HIAL for the use of Sumburgh airport, BAA for the use of Aberdeen. Then there is the cost of paying. BA,s card handling people if you book online or by phone and the travel agents fee if you use one. And with all Shetland flights the airlines have to add on a bit extra for all the hotels and ferry crossings they provide if there is some weather related delay (or indeed a mechanical delay). Final thought on flights. It is usually cheaper with BA to book one return ticket to Aberdeen and another one to London. There is a reason. On a through ticket the airline has a duty to get passengers to their destination. Not much of a duty but way better than the passenger with two tickets who can arrive at Aberdeen after a delayed flight from Shetland to find that they have been shown as a "no show" and can be left to make their own onward travel arrangements at their own cost. dollydodo
Think the boat's a brill way to travel!! It's cheap (ish) and it's fun. You have the chance to meet folk and chat with them. Tons o places to sit and chill out. Food is pretty good but not cheap so bring your own!! Bar too is expensive so take your own booze!! Put some vodka in a water bottle and everyone thinks you are very healthy just drinkin water!! Just get on that boat and enjoy. Mind over matter. If you have enough booze in you you wont feel sick anyway!!!!
