If you are running a business that shuts at 5pm...Then you tally up your till etc after this time!!

Customer's are important and will come back if you treat them right.

Buildbase or Hay's should take this into account..

If you tally after 5pm you have to pay someone to stay that extra time to do it. The knack to pleasing everybody all of the time is tally whenever you must, but leave a big enough float in the till that can cover the last however long between tally time and 5pm.

Hays have been known for the "till's tallied" 10 mins before closing for decades. Over 20 years ago I was in and a certain Mr C*****, who had just laid some things on the counter that I'd had to ask for, announced that it was 5 to 1 and the till was closed as they were knocking off for lunch, I'd have to leave the stuff on the counter and come back at 2 to pay for it and collect it.

A collection of expletives seemed to convince him I intended to be back at the Ness long before 2, and he could either take my money now, or put all the stuff back on the shelves when he came back at 2. He took the money, albeit with sarcasm. I hope his lunch gave him gut rot that day.

If a shop is advertised as being open until 5pm, then customers should be able to make their purchases up until that time. Cashing up should be done when the shop is closed. What's the point of being open until 5 with your tills and card machine out of action? All you're going to get is rattled customers.. In shops I've worked in here and south, if we had a customer who was going to make a possible purchase right at the end of the day, no way did we push them out of the door. We stayed with them until they were sorted out.

You get some great customer service here and you get some which could be improved. Some need to realise that the customer is king - without them you have no business. Especially in these hard times, shops should be falling over themselves to provide the best customer service possible to be able to compete, including internet competition. If you get a happy customer whose expectations have not only been met but exceeded, then not only will they come back, so you have return trade, but they will recommend you to others.

Here is one for you...

About 3 months ago we came up for a family wedding.

We thought that we would get button holes/flowers quite easily.

So, expectantly we went down the steps to the flower shop and politely asked if it was possible for a couple to be made.

We were told NO. The shop was too busy and they were about to sort their fresh stock. So we went away a bit upset...

We then went up a lane to a more of a fancy flower shop and got more than we bargained for.

Not only did the guy drop what he was doing, he helped us with our selection and asked us to come back in about an hour, he had to sort out a fresh delivery.

We went back down the street 25 mins later to see the other shop person still talking to the same mate.

We picked up our flowers and were very pleased and all for 12 pounds.

If you want customers to come back you need to make them feel a little bit special. You should never say no, always suggest something, and make a few more enquiries.

If that was the treatment I got as a one off tourist, then I dont think I would think too highly of Shetland shop keepers.

But I know that I visit the Knab on a regular basis and will be in need of some special flowers occasionally..

I think you can guess where they will be commin from. Not from downstairs...

i was at the same wedding as shetland peat, the day before the wedding i decided i wanted some flowers for my hair. i too went to the 1st flower shop and was told it was to short notice, fair enough.. i then went to stems, who said no probs and asked what flowers and what time i wanted to pick them up.

i went back the next day, i got 9 instead of the 3 i asked for and when i asked how much the reply was nothing and enjoy the wedding :!:

dont get that kind of service at tescos

Well I suppose its the same anywhere really...if ya get someone grumpy servin ya you end up peshed off! I still like tesco flowers...they seem to last FOREVER except for maybe plastic ones...

I agree, supermarket flowers (no preference as to which, personally) seem to well outlast flower shop flowers, and are much better value.
