Just bought a haddock supper with 2 crab sticks from the fort. Cost me five pound exactly. It may be better than some but that doesnt excuse the prices!

Just got back from Orkney.

Haddock supper with a large portion of chips (not asked for, it's the way it came), 2 bread rolls & a small bottle of juice. Enough for two for £4.65

Pretty decent quality AND the staff were pleasant and quite 'chatty'..

By contrast, I find the local chippies offer a very indifferent 'couldn't care less' type of service, are overpriced (given the size of portion) and the quality of the food on offer varies wildly.

As an aside..

Has anyone else noticed that the Fort chippie has a label on the salt and vinegar dispensers telling customers not to handle them as they spread bacteria

I find it quite amusing as the staff seem quite happy handling your fish etc. with their bare hands..

The batter is kept in an open bowl and just about everything fried in batter is dunked in it first.

The chips are kept in a large open plastic bucket.

The staff do not wear any hair covering.

I am NOT saying that the Fort chippie is unhygenic. (Quite the opposite is true, I ALWAYS find it is clean and well kept). Just pointing out a pretty dumb restriction on using what is, effectively, a sealed container.

Not really. If the customers touch the salt and vinegar containers and then the staff touch them whilst handling food it will spread germs. If the staff make sure that they wash their hands frequently then they shouldn't be passing any nasty germs onto the containers.

What about Glynn's tasty takeaway? That used to be ace, although I think he closed it about 10 years ago...

Ian's is getting a bit of a slagging, but I always quite liked it. Fort is alright, followed by the happy haddock, although I'll wager that being captured, sold, skinned, gutted, battered, deep-fried and then consumed is unlikely to make even the most up-beat fish particularly happy.

As far as I know Ian's and the Happy Haddock still use lard (correct me if I'm wrong).

When scalloway was open it used vegetable oil.

On deep fried Mars Bars - most chippies won't do them on a regular basis as it ruins the oil (molten chocolate will taint it). Separate fryer needed for it, or if you catch them just before they change the oil you could ask nicely:)
