GypsyScy
Cheers GR, I was hoping it wasn't just a negative word.My pal says her Grannie can mind using it as 'pretend' when she was young as in 'Let's joost makado we're doin dis'. So what sound does ö make? Oo or Oh...
GT
To pretend as in make-believe is 'mak-on' in Shetlan.
deardron
Another one where a Norse origin can be possible. Makadö can be traced to 'mak tø' (make to), which is a calque of ON "gera til, gøra til" - to prepare, make ready. In Faroese there's a word 'tilgjørdur' ("to-made") and one of its meanings is 'pretended, counterfeit, imitated'. The fact that English is reluctant to use 'to' as a postverb is probably the reason why 'mak tø' lost connection with its parts and changed into a homogeneous word. Graeme_Storey
To pretend as in make-believe is 'mak-on' in Shetlan.I remeber that being used by my grannie, in Edinburgh, over 50 years ago - so I guess it is in old Scots as well??
