DizzyKipper
Hello... first post My family is considering moving to Shetland sometime next year. I have done some digging and found most of your exchanges are ADSL Max enabled (up to 8Mb). Obviously speed etc is dependent on distance from exchange and line quality at it is on UK mainland. However I also read somewhere that there is a microwave link between Shetland and the UK mainland... and that this affects your connection when it's foggy, etc... I frequently use my connection to play 'first person shooter games' for example MoH:AA and BF2 and have a ping to my server of approx 40-50 ms, average for ADSL Max. Do any of you peeps play online games and how does your connection fare? I'm using the internet all day at the moment and am an admin in a gaming league, the thought of limited access due to adverse weather or terrible latency problems is giving me nightmares!! Look forward to hearing your comments Dizzy
Ghostrider
Losing connection is, in my experience at least, relatively rare. However, not a gamer, or in to anything needing that kind of capacity, so cannot comment on just how "good" the quality of the connection may be at any one given time. This may be of interest though.... http://www.shetlink.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1608 ....all 15 pages of it. Oh, and welcome to Shetlink. Twerto
I generally Play RPG's and generally don't suffer more than 40 - 80 ping.. but there are moments when a server is heavily loaded that it get very sluggish but that is server side rather than my side.. My connection was 2Mb but now it up to 5.0 - 6.0 Mb
khitajrah
I am pretty sure I am paying for 8 Mbps but when I hover the cursor over the little computer icon in the bottom right hand of my screen it says Speed: 100.0 Mbps. Is it really that good??
Fjool
Unfortunately, 100 mbps is the connection between yourself and the router, not between the router and your ISP. You may be getting 8mbps from the ISP, but probably closer to 5 or 6mbps.

fullerton101
I'm in the town, on ADSL Max. Loosing all internet is VERY rare, and pings are normally about 50-80. Are you planning on living in the town or out in the country?
DizzyKipper
Not sure yet my sister's family is planning to move first. Bandwidth has nothing to do with latency, the best pings i ever got were when i was on 'fast' ADSL (up to 2mb). ADSL Max includes error checking and this increases latency... so where before i had a 20-30 ping now i have 50... but this is quite playable, and if it stayed like that I would be happy. Online gaming actually uses very little bandwidth, but the latency is crucial for first person shooters... Could someone ping this address for me and post the result? A traceroute would be nice too Even better if they were using Pipex...85.236.100.203 Thanks for your help and comments

DizzyKipper
Hey that's pretty good, better than what i have now Mine is like Fifi's... That's a Medal of Honor: Allied Assault server if anyone fancies joining me... add 12503 as the port One last question about the link to the mainland... I may have got things mixed up here... Do you have a microwave link to the mainland or cable? It was mentioned on another post further up about another thread to read and i noticed it. Obviously a microwave link is fast but isn't affected by bad weather? ie no direct line of sight? Thanks again for your help and stuff
Roachmill
^^ It's a microwave link AFAIK. I've never noticed a loss of connectivity attributed to it - only diggers digging where they shouldn't That's not to say atmospherics don't have their fun with latency... but I don't play online myself (I carry deep mental scars from trying out Counter Strike yonks ago ) so I can't really comment on that. There's talk of a big fat fixed line being laid - which I won't be holding my breath for. IIRC it'll see use for business first before us punters get to play with it. << It's early and I've only had a sip of me coffee so take that wi a pinch o' salt About the only thing I've seen the weather have some fun with is the TV signal. On a fine day I've seen some channels (C4 and it's cousins mainly) disappear - usually in the evening. That's no biggy in my book
Twerto
There is currently a Cable beign laid between Faroe and the UK mainland ( might even of been Iceland ) so far is has reached Shetland at maywick/sandwick. Not sure what the estimated time it will join up to the mainland and how it will effect INet connections here.
