Broken washing machine

^^^^ I must disagree with that ^^^^^

I bought a TV from the Hydro a few years ago, paying about £150 more than I would have paid for the same model South. The on/off button failed within the year so I went back to the shop. I was told that I had to get the TV back to the shop myself and would have to do without a TV for up to 5 weeks while they shipped mine to Orkney where they kept their engineers. This was despite the fact that the guarantee certificate had "Local Repair Service" all over it in big capital letters.

A phone call to their head office south sorted them out. My TV was picked up and another substitute was dropped off to keep me going while the "local" engineers in Orkney fixed my set.

This incident along with the lack of choice and extortionate prices in Shetland for Household/electrical goods mean I always buy South.

A few years ago I bought a TV locally which stopped working after a year or so.

I took it in to the shop I bought it from at the Toll Clock for repair. At the time I didn't really need it so I made no attempt to find out how they were getting on with the repairs.

About 2 years later I got a call from them !!

They would have a local repair service, if they paid the bills from the local engineers.

And before admin decides to edit this post on grounds of "stating the obvious"/slander/or whatever,,, I have proof..

Everything finally got sorted with the insurances and I'm now under another warranty (since my machine is now 3 years old) but it broke again a few months after getting it back (and they'd had it for six and a half months). The fellow came out to fix it, replaced a wire, and it worked - for a week and a half. It's broken again, and has been for the last week and a half. I'm not so patiently waiting for the repair man to return, but he's very busy you know - I can imagine - fixing all the machines he's already bluddy fixed! Is there only one fellow who fixes Hotpoint washing machines in Shetland??

I'm so annoyed and I'm surrounded in dirty laundry as toddlers generate a lot of washing. I gave away my spare machine because I was told that my newly fixed machine should last another eight years or so.

I am, hence my problem. Friday, they said, then the following Thursday, then maybe Monday, or Tuesday.. now it might be Thursday this week. The laundry pile is getting bigger an bigger.

I'm paying insurance that's supposed to be covering this sort of thing. Our car wouldn't start the other day and the Roadside Assistance was out here asap so my fella was only an hour and a half late for work. Imagine if they waited two weeks like the washing machine repairman, if they were "too busy" elsewhere.

I may be acting unreasonable but I'm well annoyed. I'm too afraid to complain - it's a small place and they'd know it was me.

^^ This insurance company, they must have a phone number. Call them every day, make unreasonable demands, insist on talking to the shift supervisor, or better still the office manager. Start talking about going to Trading Standards, start talking about going to a solicitor to discuss their breach of contract, generally raise merry hell and throw the mother of all hissy fits every time.

They will ensure the repairman shows PDQ, just to save their own sanity.

You could also try Appliance Rescue if it helps.

Have you tried George Robertsons I don't think they work with Hotpoint but anything electrical thats broken in my house I always call them and they are usually there the next day or the following day if they are busy, they always seem keen to help, you could try explaining your situation, you never know!

I had the same problem with my washer/Dryer when it needed repaired, it was bought from Robertson and Peterson's in Oct 2006. It started to sound funny in Dec/Jan 07, but I put up with it, then I phoned up in February to get them to come and check it out. After numerous calls, I eventually got a visit in May 2007!! It needed a new "Brush" which he fitted on the day. He did say he was the only one who fixed machines for their shop. I was a bit dubious about buying from them as I had been told their after sales service was diabolical. I had also heard if I bought south the locals were reluctant to fix it.

So we wen't around all the local washing machine retailers at the time, even the guy in Voe(who tried to sell us reconditioned machines for the same price as new ones) The Hydro was the pits and very discourtious(I know the staff have changed since then) The Hillhead shop was much the same -the two female employees were looking at photos and never even seemed we were there. So we tried R&P where we got some polite helpful attention, he did try and push one of the brands more than the rest but thats him only doing his job.

When we ordered it it also took 6 weeks to come, I let them off though because they did provide a 2nd hand machine for us after 2 weeks of our order not showing up and they took away our old one.

I am reluctant to buy localy now atall, most shops in Lerwick need a big kick up the backside and send staff on a how to be mannerly course don't you think?

Having said that My oven needed a new element fitted last year -within a day of me going into the hillhead shop and speaking to a man, I got a phone call the next day asking if it was ok to come? I was pleasantly surprised and grateful for their very quick and courteous service. It wasn't the shop staff who I spoke to initialy and it showed. I will definately be calling on them for their services again, should anything break. It's new folk who own it now, so I hope they keep up the good work!
