I had a dream the other night (at least, I think it was a dream) that I'd gone into GB Oils' filling station, paid them in cash at the Kirkwall price for the number of litres I'd bought, and left my name and address with an invitation to sue me for the difference, which might be £3 or so. Oil companies don't like to set precedent when it comes to saving people money. If they did something like that in Shetland how long before any other remote areas were screaming for it. The oil companies have hardly been quick to lower prices in line with the cost of crude. Now OPEC have lowered production hoping to force the price of crude back up, so if anything fuel is going to get more expensive and just in time for Christmas. Guest posiedon Posted November 5, 2008 Report Share Posted November 5, 2008 If you want the big three petrol retailers in Lerwick to stop ripping you off, I have a suggestion, if you must get your fuel there, then fair enough, but you don't need to buy anything else there, you can get your newspaper, sandwich, can of juice, packet of fags, chocolate bar, et al, elsewhere.If the profit margin on fuel is so puny, then they must make a lot more on the "impulse purchases" stop buying them, and they will soon get the message.Also (I know it would be a pain) but get your fuel £10 at a time, every time you buy £10 of fuel (the minimum allowed I believe) using plastic, they get charged a transaction fee.I know it doesn't sound very nice, but hey! The filling station was bought out by GB Fuels, the distributor that appears to be holding us all to ransom. Personally, I'm boycotting them for that reason. Don't care if it's slightly more expensive at Jim's or Grantfield or Mainland's for that matter, I'll buy anywhere but the premises formerly known as Leasks! corporate Posted November 6, 2008 Report Share Posted November 6, 2008 posiedon completely misses the point; the local garages are on a very small margin, and employ local people etc etc;the problem with fuel prices in shetland lies with the middlemen, and in particular the company holding a monopoly of wholesale supply to shetland.Feel free to make a fuss, but aim the bullets at the right target.
