mogling
What annoys me, is that those of us living on Disability Benefits / DLA Mobility benefit who need a car to get around, don't get anything extra to help towards the highest fuel prices and the resulting higher prices for food etc in the UK. I did write to Tavish and Alistair about this a couple of years ago... What is it the government makes in Duty off fuel - 68p in the £ ? They could surely lower the Duty a wee bit for folk in the highlands and islands - it's not as if we're asking them to pay anything out- just make a wee bit less profit! mogling
I forgot to add: I worked out that the Pensioners / Disabled xmas Bonus doesn't cover the extra I have to pay out for fuel over the year compared to someone living south, let alone start to cover the cost of winter tyres. I mentioned that in my letter to our MP / MSP as well.
Shoogler
Has anyone ever looked into whether a complaint can be made to Brussels on the grounds of a peripheral community arguement? There may be more chance of success there than at either Westminster or Edinburgh. It may need to be done on behalf of a business/trade body rather than purely as a group of individuals. unlinkedstudent
Right, I had a look on the Competition Commission website to see that they have never investigated. The OFT, however, did - WAY BACK in 2000! http://www.oft.gov.uk/advice_and_resources/publications/reports/transport/ Now I've only had a quick speed-read through the 30 pages of the report and could see only one paragraph on Shetland. The Report appeared to concentrate on prices in the Western Isles and, if my memory serves me correctly, as there was only 1p per litre price difference between the Western Isles and here, they weren't surprised. Now the price difference between the rest of the UK and the Western Isles looks as if it was about 5p per litre back then so I've reached the conclusion that if the gap has now widened then perhaps the OFT would decide to re-investigate. MuckleJoannie
Page 9 of the report lists 4 major oil companies that distributed fuel in the Highlands & Islands. BP, Shell and Esso all used to supply garages in Shetland. None of them supply fuel directly in Shetland now. Maybe this should be pointed out to the OFT. Skunnered
^^As far as I am aware, the only company bringing fuel (diesel and petrol) to Shetland for the service stations is GM Fuels. They bring it up on their little tankers (ships, not road). This is the "monopoly" referred to earlier, the delivery company, not the service stations. Other fuel brought to the Greenhead Base has got nothing to do with this issue because they work only with marine fuel, and heating fuel.
Willow
I just returned from Aberdeen two weeks ago. The fuel there is 1.08ltr. Big difference to the 1.25 i paid to fill up the car in LK. I usually like to support local business but with a price hike like this i wish someone like Tesco would open a fuel pump in LK. Giving cheaper more competative prices
daveh
It seems so logical for them to take over and tart up the Sound garage. Alternatively, they could at least do a deal for their 5p off per litre tickets to be accepted there.
Keedle
If I remember correctly when the first supermarket was built there fuel tanks were put in to be used at a later date . Not 100% sure maybe someone else can remember .
Guest Anonymous
if Bergen is as near as aberdeen, then how would Norsk fuel suppliers get on ?
daveh
That large grassed area in front of Tesco would be ideal for a petrol station. The bus stop and the postbox would have to be moved along the road though.
