Saudi gang-rape victim is jailed

An appeal court in Saudi Arabia has doubled the number of lashes and added a jail sentence as punishment for a woman who was gang-raped.

The victim was initially punished for violating laws on segregation of the sexes - she was in an unrelated man's car at the time of the attack.

When she appealed, the judges said she had been attempting to use the media to influence them.

The attackers' sentences - originally of up to five years - were doubled.

Extra penalties

According to the Arab News newspaper, the 19-year-old woman, who is from Saudi Arabia's Shia minority, was gang-raped 14 times in an attack in the eastern province a year-and-a-half ago.

Seven men from the majority Sunni community were found guilty of the rape and sentenced to prison terms ranging from just under a year to five years.

But the victim was also punished for violating Saudi Arabia's laws on segregation that forbid unrelated men and women from associating with each other. She was initially sentenced to 90 lashes for being in the car of a strange man.

On appeal, the Arab News reported that the punishment was not reduced but increased to 200 lashes and a six-month prison sentence.

The rapists also had their prison terms doubled. But the sentences are still low considering they could have faced the death penalty.

The Arab News quoted an official as saying the judges had decided to punish the girl for trying to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media.

The victim's lawyer was suspended from the case, has had his licence to work confiscated, and faces a disciplinary session.

I despise Saudi Arabia, Im all for countries being allowed to follow what ever laws and religion they wish, but some times some practices are just so sick and twisted they are against all common decencency.

The sooner the oil runs out and this odiouse country can be put in its place the better. The arabs and their Islamic customs can keep them. I feel sorry for women in these countries.

Hey! That's a land ruled by a good friend of Britain's, innit?! How dare ye, sirs! :o I'm sure Good Queen Bess and Brown-nose wouldn't sit down to tea with the man if he wasn't a paragon of virtue, with a keen eye fer human rights (an' wrongs). Ahem.

Havin' been there twice (an' been asked te leave on the latter occasion, but that's another story!), I can vouch fer it bein' one of the most despicably run countries that is currently lauded an' courted by the West. Disgustin' how our governments will prostitute themsels te one load o' monsters, an' bomb hell out o' another. :x

Or am I bein' naive? :?

I think it is despicable that in this day and age "justice" like this is seen as acceptable. These people appear to be living in the Middle Ages. What right has any human being to lash another human being? It is just unbelieveable. We should cut off all relationships with any country that practises such barbaric punishment. Can you imagine if a rape victim was punished like that here - if it was your daughter or your girlfriend how would you feel. I'm sorry but if anyone thinks this is a "funny" situation then they are just plainly very sad.

Just another day for the Saudi cops.

Saudi Arabia's religious police stopped schoolgirls from leaving a blazing building

May God...or Allah...forgive them. I just don't believe it. How can these people live with themselves? Wonder again what they would have done if their daughters had been trying to escape. Shame on them.

And Christianity isn't?

Personally as a woman I find very little difference between the two. Each has the same origins, and the same sort of weirdoes claiming their's is the only religion. Each can and is, interpreted in many different ways. Islam was the first major religion to encourage the education of women, it's only local cultures that need to change not the religion. Some Christian culture still believe in barbarics such as female circumcision. Even in Scotland here we have cults which prohibit women speaking to men outside their family, girls going to high school or socialising outside their religion once they reach the age of marriage at 14. You can see them in their long dresses and covered heads any day south. But hey it's Christianity so it's okay!
