i dont use a modem, have used a router for several years now and its a netgear

No modem = no DSL.

You either have another box which is the modem, or more likely your Netgear has one built in. Time to look at the manual. OR, give us the model and we may be able to point you to how to find out those line stats.

Router

A Device which acts as an interface betweeen two networks.

It forwards packets based on IP addresses between your ISP's router and either your LAN or your single PC.

A router learns more about the networks to which it is connected and can be more selective about the packets it passes on.

A router can also select the best route for packets to take in large interconnected networks.

Modem

Modem is a device that transmits and receives data over the plain old telephone system's (POTS) analogue lines.

It allows your PC to connect to your ISP using the Internet Protocol.

The modem acts as a "bridge" between your PC and your ISP.

The dynamic or static public IP address which your modem obtains from your ISP is passed on to your PC.

Modem forwards packets based on hardware level MAC addresses between your ISP's router (and the Internet) and your PC.

my router is a netgear DG834v.3

Like he says. The consumer boxes people typically refer to as routers are in fact devices with both router and modem functionality. Many people seem to believe that ADSL uses routers to connect rather than modems. This is not so. It is a classic piece of marketing spin. ADSL needs modem functionality and the router part is generally there to do local things such as integrate WiFi networks etc.

Assuming you are on a BT Wholesale circuit, that line speed will give you a local circuit IP profile of 3000 kbps. This is a limit between you and the exchange. So if you are getting 2.89 Mbps throughput, then you are getting a very high percentage of what is possible with that connection.

Next question would be is that line speed reasonable?

Need the line attenuation and noise margin figures, usually found same place or near to where those line speeds are, to form an opinion.

the line speed varies from time to time, it can be pretty fast then drop off to being very slow. it happens atleast once a day. but i am fairly happy with my line but not my ISP

i cannot find the line attenuation and noise margin figures anywhere

Maybe this will help: www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php

What is it about your ISP that makes you less than fairly happy?

I signed up for broadband with a company called ADSL24 a few years back because they had a dictonary definition of the word "unlimited" downloads with a no fair usage policy because i download alot of music. this cost me £35 PCM. then without warning they dropped me down to a 20GB PCM package, no emails no letters and no phone calls. i was fairly suprised at this so i phoned them only to have someone shout at me on the other end of phone saying that there were new rules put in place that removed their no fair usage and unlimited downloads, even though i signed up for them with their old rules. Plus to top it off about 1month ago they switched companys so now a netfix group own ADSL24 and their direct debt has changed from the 14th to the 1st of the month, which means i have to struggle to find extra money at beggining of every month

Well, got sent an email from o2 this morning saying If I don't drastically cut down they're disconnecting me this month.

So, let me get this straight! They have an "unlimited" bandwidth option, which I pay for. They have no fair usage policy and they said they were going to increase line capacity.

They're still charging me for an utterly crap service (it drops to less than 200k sometimes). At most I'm downloading a GB a day. So by their estimates 30ishGB a month is a lot? Jeez. Time to jump ship.

Currently got three options:

BT

Plusnet

and Virgin

Not sure who I want to go go with yet...

^ Yea we got dumped by o2 too. We're with PlusNet now... we get 80g download from 8am-12am and then proper unlimited from midnight to 8am. The speed is great too, compared to what it was with o2. We even managed to stream the first episode of Ashes to Ashes on the iPlayer last night, something we haven't been able to do for a long, long time.

BT are a band of buggers for customer support plus their router is the worst piece of equipment i have ever seen in my days. My mum is with virgin and gets decent speeds but says their support is very hard to get through to. i know a few people with plusnet and have not really heard of any complaints plus its way cheaper than most other ISP. they even said to me that BT are going to be changeing the power station up here so we all can get faster speeds within a year :D
