Mine is a bit sluggish tonight:

From the Aberdeen server,

From the Morecambe server, upload faster than download, what's that all about then? :?

The thing is, Shetlink is a bit slow, but nothing like as disastrous as those results would indicate. Anyway, no iplayer for me tonight.

anyone else having trouble with their broadband disconnecting and reconnecting? don't know how else to describe it. given up with radio and TV, even simple browsing is becoming annoying with the "internet explorer is unable to.." popping up every now and then.

If I'm pulling this (which is about as good as it ever gets)....

....why does the internet seem like its running on kangaroo petrol?

What I mean is, for a lot of sites pages are as jumpy as Zebedee on a pogo stick. 50-90% of a page will load within a second or two, as normal, then the remainder comes in bits and pieces over the next 10-30 seconds.

Its as annoying as hell, as the last to load always seems to be what makes any buttons go live, and you sit waiting for that to finally arrive while seeing the page doing the cyber version of St Vitus' Dance.

Alas not many look at page and image sizes any more :( When I made websites a while back, I was aiming at 50kb for the home page. Sure there was no video and flashy stuff like now but with fast connections, a lot of designers are lazy. Easier to whack on a nice big image rather than optimise it... and then you have all the new dynamic stuff added to make it interactive, etc.

Slow connection means you get your kangaroo!

Can anybody who is getting slower speeds than normal (much slower speeds) and experiencing high ping times/packet loss please e-mail me marvin.smith@shetland.gov.uk

Please include your phone numbers and which exchange you are on.

BT are looking for examples so that they can test the connections. It's important that I have as many numbers as possible to pass on to them...

Cheers

^^ I hope the SIC is billing BT for the time you spend helping BT sort out their problems.

Don't get me wrong, anybody that's working towards any improvement in Shetland's internet services is due all the encouragement and thanks they can get, but it really should be someone on BT wages doing whatever is necessary locate and repair the latest part(s) of their Heath Robinson system to collapse. Like coming on here, and asking folk for help.....Then again, maybe they're having problems finding a BT engineer in Shetland who has an internet connection that's working well enough to get on here.

Here's the thing though, the reason I posted last night, was that despite my connection being about as fast as it ever gets, several sites which aren't usually "jumpy" were, and had been all day.

There are a handful of notorious ones that always jump when loading, I assume, like you say, because of the size of the page concerned. Those you learn to live with, or simply just don't use.

I was getting the "jumpy" effect on sites, including Shetlink, at that +/- 2 Mb/s line speed, much worse than I've ever gotten it at times when my line speed was as low as 0.5 Mb/s.

I dunno, something wasn't jiving someplace like it should, its gone today though.

^^Ghostrider, download Google Chrome - it a damn sight quicker than IE8 and Mozilla Firefox, even when connections are slow.

Chrome....Google....That's kinda between a rock and a hard place is it no?.....Faster.....alleged "snooping".... Do I sell out to speed, and have no secrets from Google.....Or do I keep some of my secrets, and wade through treacle plundering the web.... :ponders:

If Chrome was owned by someone else, it'd be a no brainer. Speed is tempting.....Where's a coin to toss.....
