hairyian
^ Yes hairyian my connection speed is a consistant 2560k with or without all internal wiring disconnected. I have spoken to these " far away people " and stressed that it is them not me that controls my IP Profile so they say they will have a look and get back to me. Thanks for your input, I live in hope... It is not 'them' either. There is black magic box in the exchange that keeps an eye on your line - it is entirely automatic and the ISP can only ask for a reset if they think the box has got 'stuck'. If you have a history of this, then it is not 'stuck' and the system is operating as designed. You need to get rid of the source of the problem. This is the disadvantage of the ADSLMax system. The old fixed speed services had an absolutely huge safety margin to allow for noise issues. That margin has been traded off to get higher speeds, but means the line is more susceptible to interferrance and hence disconnects.
stilldellin
^ My speed has been consistant for the last year following an upgrade I did to my internal wiring using cat5 cable other than the usual throttling due to traffic volumes. If the line conditions are constantly fluctuating due to fault conditions then surely it is up to Openreach to monitor and address the problem, sadly no longer the case since the split from BT Wholesale. I would like to know just how many users out there have had their IP profile knocked back and don't know it.

I would like to know just how many users out there have had their IP profile knocked back and don't know it. An interesting question. If it is not known the IP Profile has changed... Anyway, the system is designed to operate the way it does, it is not a fault. Whilst some lines are very stable, the nature of the technology says that unstable lines are to be expected. I read somewhere that line profile changes run at about 50 Million a day on the BT system. No idea about other networks. BTO are obliged to provide you with a working voice line, suitable for 28 kbps dialup service - nothing more. BTO have nothing to do with the ADSL service. In Shetland the only supplier is BTW.In other areas there are a number of different providers using their own exchange equipment, just like BTW do. But they are in the same boat, they rely on the connection to your property. Whilst reasonable efforts are usually employed to sort a problem line, at the end of the day you may have to accept it 'as is' or have service withdrawn. What about the 2 Mbps Universal Service Obligation? I hear you ask. UK Government keep moving on that. But BT can, if they want, provide via a satellite service. They did a deal with Avanti a while ago. But, remember the UKG Minister is a politician and, to me, appears to be bonkers as well. Then you have the unfathomable OFCOM.....So, it is possible that to comply with USO, slow lines will have ADSL removed and users told to use 3G ... OK not an option, well there should still be satellite.

thule
I wonder if anyone else has noticed BT apparently "fixed" something at the beginning of the week: I'm not sure what it was; possibly some rebalancing issue. It was reported on their website as "maintenance" affecting 01595 and other dialling codes. Since Tuesday morning, and regularly, every day since then, at approximately 08:30 to 08:45; lag has ramped up to almost double its normal (for me about 57mS) to a steady 120 mS and remains at that level all day and evening; until about 23:00 when it slowly falls back to about 55 mS again. It is too regular to be anything but deliberate. I am not with BT and this has happened before but has been fine for several months now. It seems to happen when BT "fix" something. thule
[/code] Did this fix posted today (via Plusnet) fix it? No; it has ramped down earlier today; about 17:25 to be precise. however it has a base mean of lag 68 mS rather than the normal 53-55 but its jumping around a lot more (jitter for the fellow geeks amongst us). I'm waiting to see what happens around 23:30; which is its usual ramp-down time. Funny thing is: until Tuesday last; my lag has been a constant 55-60 mS for at least 3 Months, with all exceptions to that attributable to internal operations at THULE HQ
