Wanting to move to Shetland

You sound like the "model incomer"!

Glad you're enjoying staying here and contributing to the community

Thank you for the welcome. And I got to say I am far from perfect but I just think you can make life easier for yourself by thinking about those around you as well as yourself. Shetland to me seems built on this idea of others helping each other out. But you have to put in the effort to reap any benifits. I hope the original poster does find a way to get their dream life they want here in Shetland, if they put the work in then it will be a dream come true.

I think if more folk did this (Shetlanders included, and I am one) then the whole world would be a far better place to live. [/hippy talk off]

As somebody who is looking to move up your way, I can understand some views with regard to incomers; however, I would like to say this:-

From my own experience, I can categorically state that I don't think my husband and I are jumping the queue. We have a total of 30 points with HA and 0 points with HIC! This is despite having a job waiting. So far, all the properties advertised on the HA website have been for existing transfer applicants within Shetland or the homeless. I am advertising for a swap and in one way it is nice that I have had no replies/pms and that people want to remain where they are.

As stated in a previous post, the housing situation in the UK as a whole is in a crazy state.

It quite clearly states here that "unlinkedstudent" wants to be housed in social housing.

well they are buying a place near the airport. The lady is very friendly and runs her own business. Her husband is employed by a local firm bringing his highly trained skills up here. They are taking a massive income hit to get here and are coming up with next to nowt because they are so committed to moving up here. Forget about Mr hill and is grandstanding. Its these folks we need.

And good luck to them. I hope their move goes well.

Actually, as an ordinary working class bod with a hubby who is 54, a miracle has happened and we have just had an offer accepted on a property we are gobsmacked that we can afford. Try getting a mortgage and a deposit together at his age. We reckon we'll have £300 spare when we move up, will have to save up like other peeps have to for a car (let alone the petrol and running costs) and buy second-hand furniture.

Have you not thought that people, not just in Shetland but in the UK as a whole (or world?) would prefer to be in a situation where they did not have to rely on social housing?

paulb and TeeAyBee, thank you for your kind comments.
