Do you think that forcing people to work for their benefits will encourage them to look more actively for full time employment or will it cause even more problems for the government? My initial thoughts are that it is a good idea. It might make those people that live off the dole money take a new look at life. If you take all the people claiming benefits and put them into community work then the local area should benefit. There are a lot of projects that never see the light of day because funding won't allow the manpower and cost of wages to allow it to succeed. By making people work for their benefits it ensures that projects can go ahead and gives a return to the people involved by awarding skills they may never have achieved otherwise. Those capable of work will be transferred immediately to the less generous jobseekers' allowance for the unemployed and will have to look for work to keep that. I personally know of several people on incapacity benefit that are fit as fiddles they claimed it under the 'stress or bad back' rule. At least one laughs at how easy it is to get, and he doesn't have to apply for or show that he has been 'seeking' work - which I gather dole claimants find a bit of a drag. That's after two years of allowing anything goes - where the Shetlink community moderated itself and people had consideration - to a "brave new world". The moderators of Shetlink all do so on a voluntary basis so that everyone can "share information, share resources and communicate ideas". It's what you all make of it! Its against the law not to pay minimum wage of £5.52 per hour (the rate for 18 to 21 year olds is £4.60 and £3.40 for 16 to 17 yr olds) If you know someone not paying the full rate - report them! Peter Hain The Work and Pensions Secretary and his donation errors come to mind ok for some. He should try standing in a trench with shoveling S*it for £3.40 an hour. When the mps do some proper work and stop lining there own pockets and lining up a fat pension for them selves. There are a lot of people who are disabled some who worked for 30 years or more and paid there taxes as well but Peter Hain will soon be getting them out to do something as well. This Government is more corrupt than the Tories were. mogling Posted January 8, 2008 Report Share Posted January 8, 2008 The DWP started their Incapacity Benefit "Inquisition" a good while back, and unfortunately, it seems to be the people who really are incapacitated they are hassling. A friend sooth with MS is now practically bed-ridden / has to be hoisted / needs Carers for everything... keeps getting phone calls from the DWP asking her why she hasn't got any better yet, and when she expects to be able to return to work... The amout of info they provide about long term conditions to the DLA Decision Makers is woefully inadequate, and I reckon the DWP Inquisitors are provided with even less... Sadly- the people who know how to 'work the system' will scrape through, and those who really are incapacitated, and who already feel embarassed and guilty enough at having to live off 'charity' in the first place, will submit meekly- thus worsening their conditions, increasing pain and destroying any quality of life / personal independence they may have been struggling to preserve... What was it Peter Hain said? - something like; "If you can hold a mouse, you can work." Whilst it is unpleasant for a genuine disabled person to keep receiving phonecalls, at least they can feel that spongers are actively being targeted, this can only result in the money being wasted on these parasites being used for geniune cases. With so many abusing the system it is going to take a while to identify them, genuine claimants will unfortunatly have to suffer questioning phonecalls - but the knowledge that it should only be for a short time might make it easier to bear.
