Pro's and Cons?

Pros:

  • Promote football
    Financial benefit

Cons:

  • Fitness
If it counts for the league, there is no way it could be equal. If Man United played in France while Chelsea played in Australia it would not be fair
Will people in the United States really care to see Wigan vs Derby?

I think that's missing the point. It will make a mockery of the league, of course: Richard Scudamore's justification for the possibility of a fixtures imbalance is that "every club knows they will have an equal chance to be treated unfairly".

But the key is that the Premier League are again showing nothing but contempt for fans. Clubs are supposed to be rooted in the communities in which they play. The only people who stand to benefit from this are filthy rich people looking to get richer and filthier.

To me it seems like mission creep: just like fans were unhappy with changing kick-off times from 3pm but initially accepted one Sunday televised game in 1992, then Monday night games, then Saturday lunchtime/evening games, Thursday night European games etc... In the same way, if one game being played abroad is accepted then the chances are that by 2025 there will be five or ten games being played around the globe, the teams will become franchises and cease to have any connection whatsoever to their communities.

I just hope the Football Supporters Federation et al are able to generate enough negative publicity to help ensure that this doesn't go ahead, but given past precedents in terms of the Premier League making decisions, I can't say I'm very optimistic.

A problem with the 39th game is.. who plays who?

Would it be fair to make Man United and Chelsea square off while Arsenal get Wigan?

Assuming one match actually decides who wins the title.. shouldn't access to this match be the priority of the ACTUAL fans in the country, and not the fans outside the country?
