jim-jam
I've noticed that there seems to be an increase in the amount of annonymous messages being left on the Shetlink forums. Do you think that's because the MyShetland forum closed? I gave up on that forum ages ago because of the amount of 'guest' postings I makes it very difficult to follow conversations and you don't know whether you're disscussing a topic with 1 or 30 people
JAStewart
I would prefer that you have to register, but they'd argue that some people in a small community like Shetland would want to conceal their identity and that it would push users away. I think that it is from MyShetland.
PoolHaddock
I think that you should have to register. Not sure if this wid be possible or no, but you could have it so you have to be registered tae leave a comment, but if its a touchy subject you could hit an annonymous button to conceal your identity in the "post a reply" window?? Just an idea, I imagine that wid be incredibly difficult tae do though.
Njugle
I've just seen your new avatar, poolhaddock, you are a card indeed! Anyway, serious point, guests shoiuld realise that a registered identity IS anonymous to all but the inner most depths of the site/software, so what's the problem guests? What is there to lose in registering, you actually gain, more features work and you gain a cyber-identity you can portray any way you feel like. The only time identities would be called into question is if there was some serious legal issue, which of course there shouldn't be, and if it were that serious i'm sure the ultra-boffins could trace it anyway? peeriebryan
We (the Shetlink team) have been considering our policy on this We would prefer to leave the forums as open as possible, and we would like members to be able to post anonymously when they wish However, as Njugle has just pointed out, having a login name IS effectively annonymous We would like to encourage people to register by pointing out the benefits, such as the orange ‘post indicators’, being able to start and vote in polls and having access to the ‘private messaging’ functions Ultimately, we think the Shetlink users themselves should make the decision. What do you think? Should we continue to let ‘guests’ post on the forums? P.S. Jim-jam, I hope you don’t mind, but I’m going to add a poll to your original post
Distortio
how about limiting access for guests to the 'shetland news' section? or something?
Distortio
how about limiting access for guests to the 'shetland news' section? or something? (i felt the need to say it twice cos it was such a good idea.)
McFly
I think we should leave things the way they are at the moment, but monitor the situation. I'm not sure we have sufficient regularly active members at the moment to restrict posting to members only. Doing this could stifle things a bit. peeriebryan
Just so you know what the options are...... We can make sections of the forums invisible to guests, read only to guests (ie registered users can post) or completely open
Muppet
I agree with McFly. Prefer to leave it as it is at the moment and see how it develops. There can be times when people would prefer to post anonymously (Civil partnership thread on the other forum comes to mind) It does make threads difficult to follow though. I'm sure people who begin using this forum will see how friendly we all are and clamour to join us!
Yowe
I'm getting the poll result but no voting option. any idea why?

peeriebryan
I'd like to draw your attention to a post made by Davie Gardener in the Cinema/Venue thread after taking cheapshot jip from an annonymous poster As I have said earlier I do not believe that hinding behind anonymous debating forums allows for credibility so I will make it clear I will only anwer those questions that come from identified and credible sources. If you believe in your arguement why not make yourself known? Also to resort to cheap personal attacks or comments is playground stuff and can only reek of desperation and weaken what could be otherwise valid points and arguements, so those who resolve to that do yourselves no favours and I will not lower myself to respond to them.
