Njugle
I've been up there in the dark in recent years. Nothing particularly scary happened but the two ravens that were roosting there flying away, and then returning, in the moonlight were pretty spectacular. I'd strongly advise against going inside, not for spooky reasons, but the remaining structure is all pretty unstable. I'd also watch out for cows in the field below it, if they are there this year. You don't want to accidentally get on the wrong side of a cow.
JustMe
I'd also watch out for cows in the field below it, if they are there this year. You don't want to accidentally get on the wrong side of a cow. Not exactly ghostly but there is a sign on a field gate near to the ruin saying "Beware of the Bull". Ghosts are debatable but bulls are a proven danger.
peerielass78
Good thread! thoroughly spooked mysel' out reading! Ghostrider
You don't want to accidentally get on the wrong side of a cow. Its the ends of them I'm more wary of than the sides. One end often has horns, and even if not, it has a hard head that they know how to use, and the other end has....
onlyjim
Gunista Grave yard. It was a shadow that moved from flat on the ground to standing upright and took the form of a man standing with his legs apart and hands on hips. It remained a black shadow. It just became a mist as i walked toward it. I think it was April 1996. I saw it twice during a four week period while doing some renovation work on the mausoleum. Tall? Short? Fat? Thin? In the same place both times? Average size, man like rather than woman.I took a photo the second time.Perfect clear pic' with a haze where the ghost was. There is a copy in the Maryfield. suuusssiiieee
I am a cleaner for a company, i clean at Tait & Peterson. I arrived at Tait & Peterson then i went up the stairs to the first level and knew a solicitor guy was in. I then went upstairs past the two stuffed Polcats in the glass cabinet, which give me the creeps!. Once there I opened the glass door and there giving me a shock was a boy with a backpack. I said "Alright" to which he replied. Moving into the bigger office I started cleaning then sat down on the floor empting the shredder, whilst doing this I was thinking to myself - "Why was there a boy upstairs in Tait and Peterson??. Going back to check within seconds I looked over to the door where I saw him standing and he was GONE. I heard no footsteps going downstairs. The door he was standing at is never closed (its usually ajar to walk through to the back office and toilet) but this time it was closed shut! I finished my work headed down stairs to see if the solicitor guy was still there as i was going to ask him if he knew of anyone else in the building, but as he had already left, i did not see him. As i was walking home i was thinking to myself about the young boy i met/came across at tait and Peterson, and that he looked familiar to which a name came into my mind "Paul Manson" i was certain this boy i used to work with many moons ago in Somerfield. Went home that night and told everyone, some people laughed at me, but I knew i definitely saw a young boy. Another time there i had my music on and hoover on, while I was in the spooky bit upstairs through the back office and toilet and all of a sudden someone whispered in my ear "okdokey" that was a phrase I have not heard in a very long time. Tait and Peterson is most definitely haunted!!!

Samphira
I've just joined this site. I'm really interested in anything to do with Windhouse. My father was born there in 1918. He and his family left for the mainland in the mid 1920's. I heard so many ghost stories from my father before he died in March 2007 and also his brother, my uncle. My fathers' name was Edward Hendersen Bainbridge.
mikeyboy
Can you tell us some of these stories?
Samphira
There are many stories. There is the time when my uncle, 4 years old then, tried to stroke a dog that appeared outside the house in front of him and my father then 6years old. As soon as he got near, it vanished before their eyes. There are other stories such as the room that few of the family would dare enter. The tale goes as soon as you attempted to make the bed in this room, loud laughter broke out from nowhere. Another time, much more sinister, was when a visitor tried to stay the night. They were about to go up the stairs with an oil lamp and discovered it was unnaturally dark. On pushing the oil lamp into the darkness, instead of lighting the way the oil lamp itself disappeared, light and all. The visitor did not stay. Many visitors to Windhouse did not stay for various reasons! Tales of apparitions there are many and varied. The lady in grey and the tall man in black were also told by my father. A most curious incident occured one night when the family were out walking. on their return, the house which had no electricity or generator, started to fill the windows with light, one by one. They all stood and watched this happen and then watched as they went out again, one by one. To create a phenomena such as this would take a lot of power, makes one wonder what happened. Lerwick antiques
Just found a interesting site on Face book called "Shetlands Ghosts, Hauntings, UFOS and Un-Explained Things" there are some interesting stories/topics on it so it is worth a look. I see a lot about haunting activity at Windhouse on it.
CrashBox
Has anyone had anything weird happen on the road from Mid Yell to Aywick? Got some friends visiting this week and we were over on Yell and as I was driving south on that road a car was seen approaching us from the direction of Aywick. The road dropped a bit so we lost sight of the car. I realised I needed to get to the next passing place at the top of the small rise, but when I got there the car was nowhere in sight. No side roads anywhere near that it could have gone down, and given the lay of the land I could see for a good distance. This happened around half two this afternoon.
