Ghostrider
^^ As far as I've been aware he's been surprisingly quiet on that point, however I presume he must consider himself as having dual "nationality", both Shetlander and Forvikian/Forvegan/Whatever it is, insofar as he qualifies for the best of both nations. Hits aaricht fur sum! I'm just waiting for the day that when he tries to land on Papa Stour coming back from Forvik that he's met by a Customs Officer who informs him that as a Forvik citizen his UK Passport has been suspended, and he's not allowed entry back in to the UK. Skunnered
I thought his hut blew away during the winter? In which case, is he still due to pay rates on it if it doesn't exist any more?
Spinner72
^...but aren't the council playing right into his hands? This is exactly the kind of publicity he is seeking. It will be interesting to see how it all pans out. (the article in question: Council versus Calamity ) This is the problem with council tax etc. Any private business just wouldn't bother with the legal costs of lawyers etc over a £200 debt, but the council has a statutory duty to collect council tax. They can't exactly say "it's not worth the hassle", as then everybody could stop paying. As I've said before, despite my dislike for some of Stuart's marine antics, and the rather dubious money making side of the Forvik project, I fully support the principle behind the idea and it would be interesting to eventually see it all played out in court. Mattie
What are you doing with the cash you made during your stay on the island off Papa Stour... ? Now you have been evicted. Are you donating it to the RNLI and Oscar Charlie... I think not... Lining your own pocket and taking the piss out of Shetland... Is what you do... I will be a bigot here with my request... Please bog off back to England and give us peace. Go and strut your stuff there!! You are an wannabe eccentric idiot.. Take the cause back home.. Bog Off!! Ghostrider
^^ If you actually care whether or not "His Majesty" is aware of your anonymous POV, and aren't just barking for the sake of it, or are simply making use of a large spoon.... You might have better success posting on his own boards, here.... http://www.forvik.com/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=103 They're hardly what you might call....ahem....crowded or congested. I don't think "His Majesty" frequents these parts much if at all, it seems some of us may not have shown the expected amount of respect on a previous state visit. Jumbo
Stuart Hill airlifted from Forvik What a surprise!!! More time and money spent to rescue Mr Hill from his personal quest on Forvik Island. The coastguard rescue helicopter was scrambled last night after emergency services received a call from Mr Hill that he had been injured after an attacked by an animal on the island. Now the Aith lifeboat has to be launched to transport two members of the northern constabulary to the island to investigate the "attack". I believe the initial suspect is thought to be an ill-tempered otter but the involvement of a crack group of foxes from the mainland has not been ruled out. Spinner72
I was contemplating a potential movie poster for the "If hollywood films..." thread, based on "Return to the Island", so was looking for a piccy or two of Forvik. I stumbled across this old, but well written, article on the matter : http://www.newstatesman.com/society/2008/07/hill-islands-carmichael I think the closing paragraph is very appropriate. Carlos
oh dear a mear 200 quid in council taxes. i thought the lowest was 700.if they know he is there they should treat him like the rest of us. if i built what he built i would need planning consent ect.Although the Council tax is empowered by the Scottish government and so Stuart Hill claims it all invalid, would the Council not be the current equivalent of the Ting / Lawthing, the Norse Parliament, with it's own system of land valuation, rent, and taxation? So if he does not recognise the Council as having delegated powers under Scottish laws, is the alternative not that he has to recognize them as having direct powers inside Shetland? I note too "The ting met at regular intervals, legislated, elected chieftains and kings, and judged according to the law, which was memorized and recited by the "law speaker" ...... so no need for the laws to be written anywhere.... one of the councillors can quote something from memory for dealing with the Forvik situation..... paulb
That's an interesting view Carlos. It would seem to make sense. After all the gelt is raised for the benefit of the shetland people. So what were the penalties for refusing to pay your taxes to them in the 12-14 centuries. I bet it was tougher than a stern letter from the council. Malcolm
One question still has to be answered... If he isn't paying bills etc, What has happened to the money he got from all those people buying into "Citizenship" ?
Ghostrider
^^ I doubt income to date = expenses. I saw the claimed citizenship figures reported somewhere some months ago, I can no longer remember where, but I do remember there weren't all that many.
