unlinkedstudent
^^ I haven't seen the signage. By your posts, I take it you work for the tourist office. You've just spouted off about the suggestions and the moment someone gives you one, you appear to lob it back at them!
EM
There is an area of roughly 8@ x 4@ ...What does this mean?

You've just spouted off about the suggestions and the moment someone gives you one, you appear to lob it back at them! Exactly!!. It shouldn't be my job to point out these mistakes, mistakes that shouldn't have happened in the first place. If you do work in the Lerwick office then what you should have said is that you will pass this issue on to the relevant department!. Instead of flying off the handle why don't you accept that a good number of Shetlnders have issues of concern about Visitscotland/tourism in Shetland and take the points onboard and go to your Visitscotland management with them?. In the good old days before Shetland was dragged into Visitscotland there was a nice big sign above the door of the Market Cross office which read "Shetland Islands Tourism". If 8@ by 4@ means 8ft x 4 ft then that is not some small section of the office, especially if it's layed horizontally!.
Malcolm
Sorry EM, that should read as 8' x 4' (8 feet x 4 feet).

unlinkedstudent
^^ I suggested your organisation e-mail the relevant peeps and you suggested I did it - I have no idea who the person is to whom you refer. Also, you stated in reply to another poster that you didn't have a large number of responses in reply to their suggestion about beds/rooms available. Just because it didn't get a huge response in its first year of operation, doesn't mean the same will be true in forthcoming years. I take it the rooms available system is computerised? If not, why not?
khitajrah
So come on folks, PILE IN, lets have those suggestions. I have suggested to the tourist office that Shetland could be promoted as a geocaching destination. There are a LOT of geocachers out there who, I am sure, would really like to know about this place. I wonder, is anything happening with that idea or was it just a silly idea?

I have discussed this with Steve Mathieson the Island Manager and we are looking into it, plus we have been giving out info on geocaching. I too am into geocaching
khitajrah
^ Might I suggest that you rent out GPSs at a daily rate, and not only for tourists, but so folk like me who can't afford one can rent them too.

If not, why not? No, I suggested you write to Steve Mathieson about your concerns, he is the Island Manager for Visit Scotland and his office is at the tourist office in Market cross, sorry if you thought I meant you to contact Head office at Edinburgh as that was not what I mean or said. Yes the accommodations listings are computerised and though we did not get a huge response to our request (re spare rooms in busy periods etc) this is an avenue that will be further pursued. Malcolm
I will compile a list of all of your suggestions to discuss with my coleagues and the Island manager. Even though signage isnt in our remit I will get in touch with the relevant department and ask they put the correct signage up.
Kavi Ugl
The problem is that Shetland went from having it's own independant tourist organisation to being just one little part of a bigger organisation. And I guess that the SIC councillors came to the conclusion that Shetland was not being served well under Visitscotland and wouldn't listen and so pulled the plug. If Visitscotland aren't willing to listen to the SIC what hope is there for a member of the public?!. Malcolm, I'd just like to point out that on a personal level it's not you that my concerns are aimed at - it's visitscotland - so apologies if I came across a little strong . Malcolm
Just a few photographs for the record. http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a255/ginluvva/Shop/Flag1b.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a255/ginluvva/Shop/Flagtopsb1.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a255/ginluvva/Shop/Fromthedoorwayb.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a255/ginluvva/Shop/Newsittiongareab.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a255/ginluvva/Shop/Newsittiongareab.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a255/ginluvva/Shop/Tops1b.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a255/ginluvva/Shop/Behindthecounterdisplaya.jpg As you can see Shetland is very much what the shop is all about, only around 1/16th of the total display area is given over to Scotland brochure display. We do not sell Tartan or Shortbread. Over this past year we have introduced more Shetland lines for sale than there has ever been and we are contiually looking for more. Kavi Ugl
Ah well, fair play then - it does look more "Shetlandy" than when I was in. I like the display in the centre with the wooden Oscar Charlie. What you should also look into getting for selling are miniature trow figures. The one I saw at Petta Water looked just like a troll. All you have to do now is get rid of the 1/16th of Scotland stuff And don't let the Visitscotland big wigs see these pics
icepick239
^^ Nice displays, nice tourist centre but could you not get rid of those 2 Pullovers pinned to the wall? They look as if they belong to the 1930's
