hey trooter

my cars lights come on automatically. its sooo annoying. they'll go on if you go under a bridge thats slightly dark and also some folk have said to me that my full beam are on and they're not. think they must be powerfull lights

me and my boyfriend have read over the manual so many time to turn off all the fancy modern gadgets but we cant so we just have to put up with the lights going on when they fancy. sometimes i don't even realise they've been switched on until someone flashes their lights and then i start to look around and see what the problem is

and talking of window wipers that go on automatically if anyone knows how to turn them of in a renault i'd be happy to hear. they don't even go in time with the rain and when they do decide to speed up the window only has a few drops on it!!!!

My daughter, some years ago used to have a Citreon ZX. When you turned on the ignition the dash lights came on. I thought this was a crazy bit of car design. It meant that in the town on a dark night, if you jumped in the car the dash lit up and gave you the idea your lights were ON. You drove along for a bit until someone flashed you, and you realised your error. I trust Citreon and other manufactureres have never repeated this idea.

Normally there is an auto setting so if it is just swiched off they shouldn't come on, but then again if it's a Renault it probably does what it wants!

I found this a problem having had a Visa and a ZX, didn't like it.

I always thought it was illegal to drive with only side-lights on. i.e. if you think its dark enough to warrant lights then you should use dipped beams, and side-lights only for parked vehicles -in certain areas.

Is that correct??

From the Highway Code para 226

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet).

Highway Code para 249

All vehicles MUST display parking lights when parked on a road or a lay-by on a road with a speed limit greater than 30 mph (48 km/h).

  • 2 weeks later...

Its the stupendously slow drivers that get me irate.

How is it that when I set off for work early I meet all the slow drivers, and have to overtake, since there's no way I'm going to drive 50mph all the way into town for 20 odd miles.

There's the drivers who slow down for every little corner... the most smallest and trivial corners to do 40 mph.

And then, there's the drivers who drive 50mph in a 60 zone, and 40mph in a 50 zone, so on and so forth.

Lets not forget the numbnuts who speed out of junctions in front of oncoming vehicles, only to slow you right down.

I have to mention that most of these drivers are regulars, since I have learned to recognise the cars. Although I do respect the fact some people may not know the road, or are just old... or drunk (which is no excuse)

60pmh is the speed limit.

Having spent time living and driving abroad and in the built up rat race of the UK, commuting back and forth 70 miles to Lerwick on the Lang Kames road , i've witnessed on a regular basis the worst driving, anywhere.

Perhaps all future driving tests should be done in Aberdeen at rush hour , also incorporating motorways, roundabouts, and traffic lights, then we may just see an improvement in behaviour on these roads.

And just one more thing, bloody sheep on the loose on the Lang Kames road seems to be getting more frequent, round them up before we have a bloody big pile up.

^and I think it says somewhere in the highway code that you're supposed to drive within 5mph of the speed limit unless driving conditions dictate otherwise.....

Hmmm, think it maybe says something different now.......

146

Adapt your driving to the appropriate type and condition of road you are on. In particular

* do not treat speed limits as a target. It is often not appropriate or safe to drive at the maximum speed limit

* take the road and traffic conditions into account. Be prepared for unexpected or difficult situations, for example, the road being blocked beyond a blind bend. Be prepared to adjust your speed as a precaution

* where there are junctions, be prepared for road users emerging

147

Be considerate. Be careful of and considerate towards all types of road users, especially those requiring extra care (see Rule 204). You should

* try to be understanding if other road users cause problems; they may be inexperienced or not know the area well

* be patient; remember that anyone can make a mistake

* not allow yourself to become agitated or involved if someone is behaving badly on the road. This will only make the situation worse. Pull over, calm down and, when you feel relaxed, continue your journey

* slow down and hold back if a road user pulls out into your path at a junction. Allow them to get clear. Do not over-react by driving too close behind to intimidate them

Country roads

154

Take extra care on country roads and reduce your speed at approaches to bends, which can be sharper than they appear, and at junctions and turnings, which may be partially hidden. Be prepared for pedestrians, horse riders, cyclists, slow-moving farm vehicles or mud on the road surface. Make sure you can stop within the distance you can see to be clear. You should also reduce your speed where country roads enter villages.

^^ with respect to the above post... 50mph the whole is taking the proverbial. Especially when I know the said drivers have taken that route many a time.

Sticking to 50mph causes the driver to drive between gears, meaning you're too fast for 4th gear and too slow for 5th, resulting in fuel wastage. I'd far rather overtake and get out of their slow path so I can stick to my fuel efficient one.

There's definately times when people drive slower than needed to be safe for the conditions. There's also times when people drive faster than is safe.

Telling the difference is the hard part ;)

There's not going to be many times when 60 is more fuel efficient than 50 though, although in the end it depends what price you put on your time too.

aith to lerwick 20.4 miles. at 50mph is about 25 mins. at 60mph is about 20 mins. so your getting in a flap over 5 mins. suggest you put some music on and chill. the speed limit is just that the maximum. its up to each driver to drive at the speed they consider safe. a fair bit of the route is 50 or less. bixter 40, weisdale 50, whiteness 50 the hill over lerwick 40. so sounds like your speeding.
