nederlander
I totally agree muppet , they put these roundabouts in to help the traffic flow , instead they send your blood pressure sky high . They should have had lessons for everyone when they put the roundabouts in. No indicating is a big problem here as well. It all drives me batty! Its not so much the not indicating that is the problem, its the indicating and not indicating at the wrong times!!! People indicate right when heading into town from the co-op roundabout, which is wrong, because you are not goin right, you are goin straight on! So, when someone comes to the roundabout and indicates right to go right around the roundabout and head out of town, they nearly end up with a car in their passenger seat! MaxFusion
People indicate right when heading into town from the co-op roundabout, which is wrong, because you are not goin right, you are goin straight on!technically that's not straight on, which is why you indicate....or at least that's what I was told by the driving instructor. but you're right on with "its the indicating and not indicating at the wrong times" it's preferable to be in the correct lane and then indicate off the roundaboutimho
paulb
i dont get why they spent a million on the new roundabout at the south of lerwick. what was wrong with the lights. even if every car went through there its over kill.
cheryl.hughson
In my opinion and experience of driving from Aith to Lerwick everyday, it takes a lot longer to drive than 25 minutes, regardless of what googlemaps might say. Taking into account of three bends that you really have to slow down for, and two junctions. Speeding? at 60mph? That would be one for the Shetland Times to fill an empty space with. The difference is at least 10 - 15 minutes give or take, its not how fast I get into lerwick that bothers me, its the fact that someone driving that slow is more likely to cause aggro to other drivers, therefore an accident is more likely to occur. Take this morning for example, someone overtook a slow moving SIC vehicle along a clear straight, but slowed down as she passed it leaving no room for other cars behind her to overtake. There's just no respect for other road users. As for the signalling, i've given up on caring if a driver signals or not on roundabouts, I just make sure i'm in the right of way and signal properly, that way I can keep my nose clean if an accident ever did happen. Did anyone ever experience a car coming towards you in the wrong direction on a roundabout? VERY scary
Spinner72
According to the Energy Saving Trust Check your revs - change up before 2,500rpm (petrol) and 2,000rpm (diesel). In my experience this means a speed of about 55 mph in top gear. I would agree thats about average. However, that is no reason to bomb along at 55 when the conditions aren't suitable, indeed, one burst up to 70 during an overtaking manuever would easily negate any benifit gained from a slightly faster average speed for the rest of the trip. I'm on the road a lot for work, always have been, and its both amazing and terrifying to see the risks some people take on an almost daily basis just to arrive at their destination 3-5 minutes earlier. "The conditions" don't just mean the road conditions as you see them. They also include that individual drivers abilities and comfort level. If someone feels its necessary to slow down to 30 for a certain corner, the nobody has the right to tell them otherwise. My personal belief regarding "road rage" (this is not a personal dig at anyone who has posted here) is that if someone has such a lack of control of their emotions as to get angry over something so trivial as a slower/less confident driver than themselves, they need to take stock and consider if there are more serious issues to address. nederlander
technically that's not straight on, which is why you indicate....or at least that's what I was told by the driving instructor. Really? The problem is that the roundabouts here as small as they get, so you hardly have the time to indicate as you leave them. I learned while at uni in Edinburgh, and it always amuses me to think of some of the drivers in Shetland being confronted with some of the roundabouts on the mainland! nederlander
With regards to single track roads..... I can understand people not letting you past as they have not seen you, although they should be using their mirrors! Its the ones that think they are driving fast enough and that you can't go any faster than them! They don't know where I am going, maybe I am in a rush to get to the hospital with a bairn in the back whose arm is hanging off!!!! If someone is drivin that slow on a single track road, and are not letting me past, then after about 5mins they get a flash from my lights, after that they get tooted at! cheryl.hughson
55 isn't bombing along really. 70 is however. I overtake if i think a driver is being dangerous. There have been times i have been too terrified to overtake when drivers were wiggling around the roads in their drunken states. They got reported. Obviously I do take the necessary precautions when dealing with weather conditions as well as slow drivers. I wont overtake when its wet, because thats just dangerous. I will in an emergency. Drivers that stick to the speed limit and respect other road users should not be labelled as bad drivers. And single track roads, yeh the drivers in Aith are lovely for letting you past, i spose I'm not fussed with driving single tracks slowly anyway, they can be a bit dodgy to go fast especially when they're riddled with blind corners. paulb
what about the reckless speeding sheep over here on the west side they seem to want to jump out at the lat minute. then there are suisidal bunnies nearly had an accident because of one of them. then there are divebombing seagulls, and jay walking oystercatchers. 5mph sounds fast to me. nederlander
Speaking of rabbits......... I nearly crashed into someone because they did an emergency stop, for a rabbit! Couldn't believe it! And before it's said, no, I was not too close in the first place!
cheryl.hughson
Yeh that person was a wreckless fool, for his own safety as well as other road users he should have run that rabbit over, found a safe place to stop then go back and take it off the road and prepare it for his tea. mmm rabbit stew. paulb
its the rabbit that gets stuck under your car for a while before you find it. just done a run to aith. the road just after the hill from bixter is getting iffy. i was doing only 40 and the car was shaking all over the place. probabily the sleeping hedgehog. last month i was stuck behind a slow moving otter at walls. he had big teeth so i was scared of road rage.
