tirvaluk
I was asked recently by a relative who Gilbert Bain was? I thought no problem I'll google him, or look up Shetlopedia, No, nothing about him at all.I see on Bayanne.org that he was one of 14 children and his father was a joiner from Cunningsburgh. Can anyone tell me more?
Heimdal
Gilbert Bain's father was John Bain, a joiner and auctioneer. John owned property at the South End of Commercial St. 'Bain's Beach' (next to the Queen's Hotel), is named after this family.Gilbert spent his working life in India and Singapore, where he made his fortune. He was unmarried and his sisters inherited his estate. They, Inga and Isabella, were the source of most of the money (approx £5000) it cost to build and equip the hospital in memory of their brother.
