Should I live in Brae

My partner and I are moving up to Shetland in the next few months. We both work from home so can pretty much choose where we want to live. What can people tell me about Brae? It seems big enough to be practical (i.e. shop, doctor, dentist, Indian takeway - all the essentials!) and has some houses with some lovely views so it ticks most of the boxes. The one thing that you can't get a good feeling for on a couple of short visits is what the community is like so I would be grateful for the views of those who know it a lot better than I do.

Is Brae a great place to live or should we choose somewhere else?

^^^Thanks for pointing that out.

Yes, Brae is about five miles from Sullom Voe, so yes, you'd think this would mean it would have amazing transport links. However, I find the opposite to be true. As someone who has regularly taken the buses since the age of about 14, I can recite the exact bus timetable from Brae to Lerwick:

0710

0810

0935

1030 (doesn't run on Wednesdays)

1305 (doesn't run on Saturdays)

1535

1720

1755 (runs April-September)

1915 (Saturday only)

And, of course, the buses do not run on Sundays because they can't be a**ed. This goes for Shetland as a whole.

Can't remember all the ones that run from Lerwick to Brae but they're a lot less regular I think...

Pffft! What's wrong with that? Like a lot of country areas, we've got one main bus in and out - 10am and teatime - plus an early morning workers' bus which connects with the Brae bus.

And JAS... each to his own, and I know we have the most expensive fuel in Europe , but not everyone wants to live in the toon, which let's face it, nice as it is, could be a small town anywhere.

Come to Northmavine, aa. ;)

You think that's a bad service?

We get the school bus out in the morning and back at 6.00 pm, and that's it! (Oh and a shopper bus on Thursday, out 10.40 and back around 15.00.

Ah, so you do...

Although I just wish the buses were more regular, and additionally that either the 1030 or the 1305 ran all week, preferably the latter.

But yeah - crap transport links aside, Brae's not too bad a place.

Hey.. methinks we might be in the same village. Yep, the Thursday shopper bus aka the little old Granny Express.

edit: and I'm eyeing up that Brae time-table with an unhealthy longing. My goodness how lucky you are! With a timetable like that I could... do things! Get out of my house! Have the opportunity to socialise! Actually go back to work and be back in time for the school bell! ~sigh~

I think the late bus from town is the one that annoys me most.

It runs at 2145 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and on Saturdays at the slightly later time of 2230. Those of you who don't drive or live in da toon are all going to ooh and ahh again, and tell me how lucky I am. As a twenty year old I don't think I'm that lucky. It would be nice if, on Friday and Saturday nights, they ran a later bus at about 1am - even if it was double the usual bus price folk would still use it. Hey, it's cheaper than forking out for a taxi! :x

Anyway, back on topic...to aa, if you want to move to Brae then be my guest, we like having new neighbours :) although where are you working? It's probably better to try and get a place somewhere that's close to your work.
