Obesity in Shetland

I just read this in this month's Focus magazine of science & technology.
Overweight people shouldn't blame their glands or big bones, instead they should blame their genes, research published in the journal Nature genetics has identified a mutation relating to the hormones that control appetite in people of northern European descent.

It's the first time a link between obesity and genetic mutations has been found, and could lead to more effective treatments.

However, Exercise 'blunts fat gene effect'

The fat should be drided and given no peace, in the greater scheme fat children or adults should be used for the greater good. Unless either we want to live in the dark ages the planet can not survive us. O dear/ Why pray tell do we want more people in shetland? I was at a meeting with da planners and no one seemed to know why?

I'm overweight by 2 stones. I remember when I was younger, I used to carp on about how nobody needed to diet if they ate sensibly and had regular exercise. Oooh, how things have changed!

I got psoriatic arthritis so doctor says I can only do water-based exercise. Years ago, rode a motorbike and played squash regularly. Now, I look like a beached whale in my cossie.

I've recently broke my leg so I am really struggling now. I don't pig out on cakes, biscuits, crisps and chocolates. I'm quite looking forward to the physiotherapy for my leg and desperately want to shift some lbs.

So what's my gripe?

My biggest gripe is the blooming Olympics here in the ever-increasingly politically correct LB Newham. Now my doctor could refer me to a scheme where I could go swimming at the local pool IF I was unemployed. I'm blooming not unemployed, but a skint by most standards self-employed bod. I can't afford £4.50 (reduced rate with Newham Leisure card) to go to aqua aerobics, plus £2 each way on the bus. I don't think my bath tub is large enough for me to exercise in it. Perhaps I should risk another disease and swim in the Thames?

But sir, a single bus journey costs just a pound if you use your oyster card.

As for the obesity thing after years of maintaining that to seals and bears fat is good one of my doctors has persuaded me that I kind of have the option of get fit or die. No booze, no sweet things, limited fats and more exercise. At this moment I am missing the sweet things far more than the booze but that may change.

Oh heck; firstly, I'm not a Sir, I is a woman! Secondly, I don't have an oyster card - I work from home and thus do not have the pleasures of commuting on the glorious London Transport system. Perhaps I should travel more on public transport (not that I have the need to) - I may shed pounds in sweat as you are like sardines in a tin!

Please explain

Unless either we want to live in the dark ages the planet can not survive us.

"Either" implies there is also an "or", so it's live in the dark ages ... or what? I don't understand what you're saying here.

The thing is most of us (me included) are overweight because of what we eat and when we eat it. I am seriously overweight and got that way because I ate sweets and chocolate and never did enough exercise. I drove everywhere even to the local shop when I could easily have walked. Now my health has deterioted severely and I can only walk when and if I am able and I regret all the things I ate and shouldn't have. Now I am eating sensibly and have nearly cut out all chocolate and sweets. I know I've only got myself to blame for being fat but I am trying to do something about it. Hindsight would be a wonderful thing to have.

Respect for your honesty. I hope things work out better for you.

As folk who know me will testify I'm hardly the slimline version, however, I am very strong, I work very hard and can still pull an 18 hour shift and be ready for work the next day. Size isn't always a measure of fitness and endurance, you skinny weight nazis would do well to remember that.

As ever, you Shetlinkers who are on the large size and are doing something about it have my support such as it's worth and my respect, and you skinny detracters can go eat a pie.

^^^ thanks for the support. You're right size isn't a measure of how fit and strong someone is but it's widely perceived if you are fat you are unfit. I have heard some thin people who moan that they are fat and can't fit into their clothes (my sister being one of them she nearly has a breakdown if her size 8 jeans are tight) they should try living a day as me and then they would be happy with their weight/size.

I have encountered people, with Styles view point many times in the past and found them all racist about something in some way They don’t like blacks or girls, unless they have breast the size of Zeppelins. The first thing for them is to go out and get the sun and spank the monkey over page 3. And want to put every one into Concentration camps if they don’t conform to his view of the perfect race (Disabled and mentally ill) how about Death squad Styles just put all the overweight people into the ovens at the nearest power station you could use them to keep your house warm in the winter. I have just been told I have psoriatic arthritis as well and its bloody painful. What is next Styles people who have lazy eyes or people who look at you in a funny way. There not many blokes over 40 who don’t have a bit of a beer gut on them, fat and full of alcohol they will burn very well. When it comes down to it Styles you seem to be a big bully, if there is anyone who wants to admit they know him maybe they can tell all if he bullied kids at School for there pocket money.

And well said hellsbells.

And why is it that people always assume, that just because you are bigger than them they have got to be unhappy in some way I’m overweight and I am happy and get on with my life. I treat people the way they treat me. I have made some good friend over the years. And some are fat some small and some who has different beliefs. And I have met some with who I just cant stand the sight of and ignore if they pass me in the street. Yes overweight people can loose weight but an @s hole will always be an @s hole no amount of exercise will ever change that

Parahandy, dropped you a pm.

Personally, I find that if anyone ever did have a go at me for my weight (fluctuating between Size 16/18); I'd quite happily whack 'em with me walking stick. Oooh silly me, I've broke me leg so they've let me loose with two crutches now ... ah, the damage I could do with them. (Coughs) not that violence is the answer.

There is so much social pressure on people these days to conform to the norm. I do try to eat sensibly but must admit, quite liked the recent report that eating late at night does not cause you to gain extra pounds!
