If more council meetings were afflicted with a bit of heat and storm there might be slightly more sense that came out of them. One gets the impression most meetings are far too cosy affairs, almost like no-one wants to make a fuss. Not healthy for any democratic process IMHO. Yeah i know that.. but it jsut frustraiting when Shetland news is alway gives the impression of backing the LPA.. and not representing a fair impartial view. there is no denying both side are as bad as another but that is it.. the council is no worse than LPA in this .. as LPA is no worse than the SIC on a political view. ( to save confusion i think both are pathetic in the way this has been handled ) The headline to me gives the impression that the idea of a bridge is done and dusted which is far from the truth. This talk of heads should role for this incompetence.. lol it does make me laugh.. What exactly is the incompetence here? councilers? the bridge team? LPA? LPA advisors? and to tie the libary to the bridge is nonsense.. not even the same people ( other than councilers ) are invovled. So many people putting the tuppence worth in without havign a clue what is going on. ( including the councilers ) My conclusion to this is to kick our councilers and the LPA board in the rear out the door.. and leave the proffesionals on both sides work on this without any of this political nonsense and lawyers who are just rubbing their hands with glee at the money to be made ( to put my feelings lightly )
Fjool
not even the same people ( other than councilers ) are invovled. This, I think, is the salient point.
Njugle
I thought it somewhat ironic that Theo Smith was citing low numbers on the Bressay school roll as a reason for getting a bridge. Asides from any fixed link being suitable, and the subsidised ferry being 'very available' despite slightly reduced schedule, surely any fixed link would be a step toward closure for the Bressay school due to it's proximity to Lerwick and the ease of a bus service once a fixed link is established. Styles
I thought that as well about the school as whats the point of it when fixed link is in place.
Twerto
knowing te blunders that have and are going on.. it wouldnt surprsie me if you were right Njugle.. but alternatively.. If a fixed link was in place and the population grows the school could equally be extended because Sound and Bells Brae are already bulgeing at the seems without much room for expansion. but I am sure someone wil now bring up the thoughts of decentralisation. tarotangel
The whole of the BCC is very pro fixed link. When I went to the school the total roll was between 26-29 people. They then built an extension to the school about 10 years after I left as there were a lot more families on the island. Although I'm not living there at the moment I've not heard anything about families specifically leaving because of the ferry and it's schedule. The whole bridge thing has and does divide Bressay greatly, to the extent that some people have fallen out hugely over it, I noticed that Theo did not mention that. Theo has completely missed this point out and to me misrepresented the feeling that is there against the bridge. It sounds like the whole of Bressa is behind it which it isn't. I am glad that someone has at least asked someone that lives there what they think though instead of folk that don't actually bide in Bressay. Indeed. The Bressay school has been included as a potential closure in the later stages of the SICs education review if and when a bridge is built. The Council are looking at providing a bigger new school to replace Bells Brae anyway which presumably will happen regardless of whether Bressay closes or not. In a more general sense, everybody recognises the advantages fixed links can bring in terms of accessibility to jobs, leisure activities and services in neighbouring islands, decreased transport overheads for existing or potential island industries and savings to the Council in terms of the day to day running of the ferries. However, that improved accessibility brings with it the inevitability that local services provided by the public sector (and the associated jobs they as well as the ferries provide) will either be lost or shared with those in neighbouring islands. That loss has to be balanced against the advantages fixed links will bring but I'm not convinced that everywhere would fare better off.
Twerto
Hope if they go for a tunnel they dont use this method. Sao Paulo collapse: NATM used, despite failure historyTunnelling experts this week questionned contractors decision to use the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM)on the section of the Sao Paulo Metro that collapsed earlier this month They pointed out that ground conditions made NATM a risky tunnelling option, especially as the city has a history of similar failures. The collapse on 15 January at the site of the Pinheiros station near Sao Paulo University resulted in the death of seven people. The tunnel failure occurred close to a junction with a 40m diameter, 40m wide deep access shaft whose sprayed concrete wall also collapsed. It was the fourth NATM collapse on the Sao Paulo metro in four years. humptygrumpty
I was just stating the point twerto that these councillors seem to be led around by the nose by "officals" either on the bridge and it was with similar advice with the library resulting in millions lost. Or do you think you are the only person on here that knows whats going on ? Now that makes me laugh.
Twerto
I think that should be phrased to say " I ( as in me ) would love to know everything.. but alas i dont. I do know though that the tunnel collapse story I posted is what is/was proposed tunneling method by the LPA as an alternative.
Carlos
As far as I know the NATM has been very widely used worldwide. Because it tries to make an efficient (as cheap as possible) design and removes a lot of the belt and braces approach it leaves a lot more oppertunity for the designer to get it wrong. There is nothing inherently bad in proposing that as a tunnel method, it would just be that you would have to make sure and get it right. It would seem though that it is a method where the final costs are more difficult to estimate in advance, as you have to wait and see what kid of rock / groundwater you hit along the way.......
