Frankie
http://www.cornwall-online.co.uk/bih/Welcome.html I see they describe the helicopters that serve the Scilly Isles as being just like a bus service.
Stirrer
Shetland Times 31st October 2008 Front PageBressay tunnel in three years, say engineers behind project Interesting to read the article in the Times yesterday regarding the next construction project to cost the SIC millions without ever being built. This project is being led by the same project team which claimed their iconic Bressay Bridge scheme was 'robust' and the only answer to serving the population of Bressay. Bill for that fiasco is still rising and could top £5.25 million by all accounts. Now we have them saying that the tunnel option, which was completely discounted by this same team, is the best answer to the needs of the Bressay community. Stopping just short of claiming the next installment will also be iconic, the project head said "Attention will be paid to this tunnel at national level because it would the first sub-sea tunnel, and there could be attention from other Scottish islands" With statements like that, I am surprised that the Times did not leave out the final word in their headline ! Muppet
And nobody seems to have batted an eyelid at a £46 million price tag for a project which was capped at £19.5 million.
PJ of Hildisvik
What are the main driving forces for a tunnel to Bressay? Is it solely for huge residential expansion of Lerwick, or will it be just mainly for industrial units etc. Surely if it was for new homes on a big scale etc you would need pedestrian and cycle acess, cos if say another 1000 people lived there, 11 buses a day only transporting pedestrians and cyclists would be daft. Being in throwing distance of Lerwick, surely you would want to walk and cycle at a time of your own choosing.
paulb
Im sure its a (Scott)ish thing. who is in line to make a killing on land values. Who chums are pushing it through. Bressay is not declining if anything its expanding with their ferry. Look at the places were the population is and start there. It would work out cheaper to move the Bressay population out and build them a house on the mainland han build the tunnel.
PJ of Hildisvik
Novel idea coming up , £46 million price tag divided amongst population of around 400, would give them £115.000 each to buy their own fast boat to travel back and forth

How about joining Bressay to the mainland and doing away with the cost of running and replacing the ferry forever ?

Carlos
Bressay is not declining if anything its expanding with their ferry. Look at the places were the population is and start there. The whole STAG appraisal thing is almost certainly going to give more points to a project that's projected to serve more people in the future, not less. The same as you would not build a new, bigger school in a district where pupil levels were projected to fall. That's not to say that the council should not support areas of declining population, just that it would be for the council to justify that on other grounds. JustMe
From the Shetland Times websiteMeanwhile, the team suggested the tunnel could lead to an improvement in the Bressay infrastructure. There would be work done on the Heogan road and walking and cycling would be encouraged to and from the tunnel as there would be 11 buses per day to take walkers and cyclists through it. The way that reads makes me think that walkers and cyclists are not meant to use the tunnel except in one of those 11 buses. This is wrong.....a tunnel open 24/7/365 for motorists and 11 crossings a day for pedestrians and cyclists. This discrimination is not acceptable.
