Rasmie
Has anyone got any good ideas to replace my old storage heaters.Would like something a bit more flexible. Thought about putting in oil, but that's dear. Is there anything else on the market that might better? and hopefully cheaper with out too much capital investment...... ArabiaTerra
An air source heat pump driving underfloor heating. More expensive initially, but it will save you a fortune in fuel bills in the long term.
Fjool
I'm not sure an air-source heat-pump is much use, thb. I could be wrong, but I don't think you can heat an entire house with these; more that they supplement a traditional method. /vaguely ignorant
ArabiaTerra
It depends how you use them. If you just hook it up to an existing radiator system then it will need a boost from a traditional heat source as it doesn't heat the water enough to properly heat the radiators. However, if you use under-floor heating the surface area being heated is so much greater than traditional radiators that the high temperatures radiators run at is not needed Also because you are heating the floor, and as heat rises, under-floor heating is inherently more efficient anyway. Hope that helps.
Rasmie
I guess that would mean ripping up the floors?
paulb
plus you can get a grant for any of the green heating options. 30-40% may be worth think about. our heating costs have shot up so even 5-6000 will soon be payed back. plus you will have the warm feeling of being green. cant you retro fit the underfloor stuff without ripping up the floor. ArabiaTerra
I guess that would mean ripping up the floors? If you've got laminate down, then yes. If not then it would go on top of your existing floor (AFAIK) with the carpets/laminate on top of that so your doors would probably need trimming at least. I should make it clear at this point that I'm no expert here, so don't take my word for this. I don't have this set-up in my house, though one of my mates is looking into it. Though it is true about the grants, I know that much.
Njugle
Circulation under floor heating of the type you seem to be suggesting goes through pipes that are about 20mm, work well set in concrete to ensure consistent ambient heat and to allow proper insulation underneath. I've seen underfloor (with radiators too) used to great effect with a heat pump* but not with an air-source. Not sure how that would work either. Old style electric underfloor heating didn't require ripping the floors up, but i don't think there is much comparison to this. Not heard any feedback yet on the economy of it, as the motor involved was quite meaty and there was the suggestion that if there was insufficient ground heat the system would draw heat from electric to top itself up.
