Colin
Some 'weapons' are only used for shooting inanimate targets though. Archery is a valid sport, but dangerous in the wrong hands, or when used without proper precautions. Same for paint-ball. Yes, but they still require you to 'maim' or 'kill' something in order to achieve 'success'.Archery and Paintball as sports are just practice sessions for the real thing. There's nothing wrong with a pistol used in a shooting gallery. It's quite something else to take that same item out into public and point it at people. The fault in the second scenario lies not with the weapon, but with the wielder surely? Agreed. I'm not anti-gun (quite the opposite). I just feel that there is no such thing as a 'responsible' use for any weapon. You either want to use it to kill and maim, or you don't. End of.. Dressing it us as 'pest control' or 'sport' etc. just doesn't wash with me and the proponents should own up to their real intent. It's just a pity that the victims of Shetlands answer to drive by shootings weren't able to return fire in a 'responsible' manner. JAStewart
and how many crofter/farmers do you see trying to shoot kids on the street. Not on the street, sure. that the point about guns they are made to kill so a prat shooting one at people tells it allFarmers are just as bad as BB owners in that respect then, based on that logic. Should be ban video games where we can kill people too? You should consider moving to Germany, where BB guns and nasty games are banned, hurray for freedom. but thats fine cant spoil someones fun can we.must have all the freedom to do what we want and no responsability.Just how many people are they killing? Does possession deserve 3 years in jail? Is there any cold-hard evidence that use of a BB gun leads one to use real firearms when older? Me and my mates all used to have BB guns when we were little, we're not murdering psychopaths... yet.

This has to be the most ridiculous opinion I have ever heard in my entire life, unless you were being sarcastic . So you are saying everyone who owns a device which can be used to kill, is really a cold blooded killer at heart, and should own up to it? Do you think the game of darts is a game populated by people with the secret wish to kill? Darts are weapons for sure, the people who like target shooting also would secretly like to go around shooting people? same for clay pigeon shooters? You are claiming people who own weapons are secret wannabe killers. I find that highly offensive, and I dont even have any guns.
ArabiaTerra
Archery and Paintball as sports are just practice sessions for the real thing.I've never tried paintball (but it looks fun) but I have tried archery. I used to be a member of the Shetland Archery Club in my youth. The shooting we did was not "practice" for the "real thing", it was an end in itself. Shooting at a fixed target at a fixed range bears no relation to shooting at a moving target at variable ranges. The techniques required are entirely different and I'm quite sure the same goes for any type of target shooting, whether using bows, Xbows, air guns or firearms. Clay pigeon shooting is probably a lot closer to "real" shooting as any type of target shooting. Do you want to ban that? The point is, after Hungerford and Dunblane, we have the tightest firearms legislation in the world. And did it eliminate gun crime? No. All the legislation achieved was to stop thousands of legitimate, responsible people from enjoying their sport of choice. Simply banning a whole class of activities because a few idiots misuse the tools required by that activity is a knee-jerk OTT reaction that punishes the public by further restricting their freedom. Going by your logic, we should ban cars the next time some drunken idiot uses one to kill a pedestrian. By all means have stiff sentences for idiots, but don't punish me for something I haven't done. trooter
A lot of it depends on the environment in which people are brought up. The UK has a big problem with 'gun culture'. Other countries don't have such a problem, take Switzerland. Liberal gun laws and strong shooting traditions, has led to a very high gun count per capita. Switzerland has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world, but also one of the lowest firearm related crime rates in the world.
