40 million for how many people thats about £100,000 per person. they would all have to do 50,000 trips each to pay for it. that assuming of course that you can charge for it; would the snp goverment be willing to allow a toll. were is the cash coming from us, scotland, uk,europe. still have to ask why bressay first. there ferry is ok and it runs with less disruption due to the weather than most of the others. still say yell should be first its the busyier route.

I agree that Yell first would make sense purely from the traffic volume.

BUT!!

There are a few things wrong with that idea. Firstly the Yell sound ferries are fairly new, Secondly, as Bressay is a short tunnel it's a good place to try the technology; And finally,,,, how many millions of rate payers money would the SIC manage to piddle away in feasibility studies a for tunnel to Yell. likely more than the Bressay tunnel will cost.

If they're going to do it they need to get their fingers oot and do something soon. I agree that I think the northern isles should be done first as I think that their need is greater than Bressa.

I'm just worried that with all this money that they have spent on this report and that report what money will they have for actually building it and will it have to be built cutting corners? I'm quite happy for the ferry service to be kept but if the tunnel is going to happen get something done about it.

My main worry is how are they going to go about funding the tunnel. The Bressay ferry gets in money at the moment but if they swap to tunnel where is they money going to come from for it's upkeep? They can't put a toll on it as the precedent has been set by the SNP not to have charges on bridges so that would go for the tunnel as well if folk kicked up a fuss about it. I don't feel that paying a £1 each way would be bad but you can bet a few folk would.

I can't remember all the wrangle about the Skye bridge, but didn't the government basically have to buy out the investors who were charging the toll?

If so that, in itself, sets a precedent that if the Scottish government wants toll free bridges/tunnels, they might as well pay for them in the first place.

Who paid for the Trondra and Burra bridges in the 60's, the then ZCC was always pleading poverty, so I can't imagine they did it all themselves. There was a minor Scottish Politician of the day up doing the opening, which would suggest the bridges were Westminster babies more than Hillhead ones. If H.M Government paid then, they should pay now.

but you voted to devolve powers to scotland and guess what its all been spent on the tram system the new bridge ect. if you think an snp goverment is going to spend money up here your joking. they would not even allow us the ferry scheme that there loyal voters got, maybe our msp should switch sides and then we would get the bribes, or we could pretent we wanted independance that would get lots of money thrown at us.

I didn't!

if you think an snp goverment.....

I didn't vote for that either

....is going to spend money up here your joking.

I don't! they'll need a gun held at their heads to make them part with each and every penny, so the sooner its started to wheedle it out of them penny by penny the better.

or we could pretent we wanted independance that would get lots of money thrown at us.

I'm very tempted to say, never mind pretending, go for independence for real. Despite the forced smiles and scripted words to the contrary there's as strong an undercurrent within the SNP of not seeing Shetland as a full and "true" part of Scotland, as there is among Shetlanders of not seeing Shetland as a full and "true" part of Scotland. Any attempt for the SNP and Shetland to co-exist while the SNP hold any sort of power can only end in tears, for us.

with the 200 mile fishing and oil rights they just may. but if you were an avid little scotlander were are the pounds going to be spent.

they are fast promoting the Gaelic language with alba tv and language in schools. its going to be like wales in 20 years. were going to have Gaelicroad signs. we need to press for the same standing as the Gaelic homelands. shetlanders are proud of there history and tradition. but remember that your history warns us of our future if we dont learn from it. dont be meak and escepting of the crumbs, be pains and we will be noticed.

i think we have more chance with the uk and europe. heck if this keeps going its forvick for me.

paulb.

Please try using some capitals at the start of sentences. I'm not being a grumpy old sod,,,well no more than normal

But I find your posts very hard to read.. That little button with an arrow pointing upwards on the keyboard is a very useful thing. :D

Having said that, I agree completely with you on the Gaelic thing, although I've always wondered why the TV continues to bombard Shetland with Gaelic programs, especially in this new digital age when they should be able to eliminate Gaelic programs from non Gaelic regions.... I could go on for ages about that, but back to the topic...

What was that?

Ahhh yes, Bressay tunnel. Or how the SIC piddle away money on feasibility studies, without achieving anything.

Its barely 40 year yet since the then Secretary of State for Scotland met numerous "messages" painted on the road, and on sundry outbuildings between Sumburgh and Lerwick, stating "Willie Go Home", in varying levels of politeness, when he came to visit to discuss lumping us in with the Highlands in some scheme or other.

That kind of spirit needs to be rekindled.

^^^I may be wrong, but I think some of those painted slogans can still be seen on walls throughout the isles.

I know there is still visible evidence of some political slogan on the bridge near the Walls shop. Maybe that was about something else, but certainly from the same era.
