Just watched the peerie procession and burning - beer in the fridge for the main event

 

Had a call at 5 o'clock to let me know there was a spare suit if I wanted to catch the last plane up Do I wish I was there?, probably, but there's always next year

I've watched a lot of the coverage via the cameras today as I live south (though I am a Shetlander born and bred) and I must say it's almost as good as being there. All I need is the smell of paraffin to complete the experience.

 

(also the heat would be good too as I have no heating due to a broken boiler).

The idea for broadcasting the procession is over the net is great, I just wish they used a proper camera, rather that one that appears to have been bought in a PC World sale.

Pretty good for an experiment, just shows what can be achieved despite the comms restricions caused by 200 miles of string and 2 beans cans...

 

I'm guessing it would need serious investment to get a camera that can cope with filming 1,000 flickering torches on a pitch black night from a distance.

 

I hope Shetland Tourism recognise the benefits of promoting the islands by streaming live events like this

 

p.s. and if anyone was disappointed by the sound quality - it doesn't sound much better when you're in the heart of the action. As for the wind noise - remind me again why I generally don't miss the isles in the midst of winter..

^^ Absolutely agree. I wouldn't even want to comprehend the quantity of people hooking in to watch ... and to pumple that down what is the microwave link to mainland UK to get a hook into the wider Internet!.. Crikey. Hands down and a damn good show I say

Well done - great idea, pity about the weather but this is Shetland in the middle of winter!

I enjoyed it very much, better than a relative spoiling her full enjoyment by holding up a mobile phone. It needs some fine tuning as it is, good show to the camera operator, a difficult job. The lens was splattered with rainwater. It would be interesting how many hits it got. You could always extend the CCTV to the route, use the microwave camera links that exist and broadcast it that way, needed a wind break for the microphone.
