we have relatives up, we went to gilbertson, i thought that teh blue man group were brill, would love to see vid of them anything on you tube??

Just a bit of advice for anyone who may never have been to a hall before (my father and partner learned the hard way):

 

1) It's a BYOB occasion.

2) The Sound Hall and the hall in the Sound School are two separate venues, make sure you get tickets for the right place.

 

Um, what's the story with the Sound School venue? Everyone was dressed to the nine's... is this a normal thing for the halls? I've never been to one before so I couldn't tell them what to expect They ended up staying for 15 minutes feeling terribly underdressed and booze-less before meandering to the pubs (and having a smashing time regardless).

 

I too thought that the webcam was a fabulous idea - it meant I could have a sneak peek at what was going on even though I was home with the kids.

depends on the hall, some seem to have a dress code others do not, think it depends on the hostesses??

Yes......It's well known that you get dressed up for Up Helly Aa - However not everyone does, and yes Sound School is a barless venue....''School'' gives it away!

^ I didn't know you got dressed up for Up Helly Aa. I accidentally got them tickets for the school instead of the hall. They didn't find out until they were turned away at the Sound Hall entrance. Serves me right for not checking the tickets properly.

I saw there act 7 times and it was brill - the folk in the halls were well flabbygasted. Heard some say "that it is was shame that it wisna a weemens squad"?

Indeed, maybe I'm biased but it was THE squad of the 2010 Up Helly Aa - No.19 Slantigirt Flabley!!! Filmed for me by our fiddlebox carrier Craig Nicolson at the Lerwick Town Hall.

I reckon you'd only get away with it if you wore a Gossard Wonderbra and deffo not a Playtex Cross-me-heart bra.
