Ghostrider
Today, on several occasions, I've had the 'orrible little beastie Windows IE message in the grab below popping up at me when I opened a page. No obvious pattern, just occasionally at random. Doesn't seem to matter whether you click the "OK" button or the red top right close out button to lose it. Nothing changes on the page either way. Only happens on Shetlink of the sites I've been on. Running XP SP3/IE7 for my sins. I *think* all relevant updates are aboard them. Any suggetions how to lose the little box permenantly, its getting a mite annoying. Thankyou. http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq330/Redneck_Hillbilly0504/untitled2-1.jpg
shetlandcars
yea im getting it too, I dont think its anything nasty - it looks to be a file that forms part of a flash object and it appears to be missing from the location where the flash object is served from what i can gather perhaps related to the ad serving software or shetlink itself? Bubi
I have it too - only on Shetlink. Pretty annoying
Fjool
Yeah; I've seen this myself. I think one of the adverts is doing it, but I cannot do anything to solve it. I'll point an appropriate person at this thread, however. Thanks for your patience.
Nigel Bridgman-Elliot
Incidently, how much does the advertising add to the budget if I can ask that! I was just wondering, what it might cost in the way of donations/etc. to get rid of the adverts!
Spinner72
Its just a file required to run some flash content, and the sign of a non-compliant ad. Google are pretty quick at removing such offenders, at least with in the contract for gaming sites. Can't see why a forum would be any different. Edit - sorry, forgot to say its nothing to do with your system so dont worry about it
ArabiaTerra
Use firefox with Adblock Plus. Bye bye adverts.
JustMe
Ok Adblock Plus seems to block lots of adverts but is Shetlink going to lose income because some users now block adverts?. Impressive how well it has worked for me so far.
Fjool
If you're blocking the ads, please do make a Paypal donation instead; otherwise you're denying Shetlink any way of paying for the bandwidth used. Remember that Shetlink is run by volunteers, for no profit. The adverts are (usually) an unobtrusive way to reduce the overheads incurred. Go on... click the Paypal button. I thought that page adverts only generated income when clicked on. Do these pay just on being shown? Incidently some are, in my opinion, really iffy especially the "You are the nth person to be selected for a free bla bla..." type. Don't suppose you get a chance to choose which turn up. Fjool
Well... you're not going to be able to click on adverts you cannot see, now are you? I frequently see things I'm interested in and, since it costs me nothing but time, I click them knowing that Shetlink benefits. If I see a really annoying advert... I click that too! This way the company that made it have to pay Shetlink. Think about it... And yes, I think there's a degree of selection about which get shown. The iffy ones have been mentioned before and some were removed. If there are still dodgy ones going then please do highlight these; the quality of the advertising is important. I'm not involved with the selection of adverts, however. You'd have to ask the uber-mods about that. I can understand people's dislike of advertising. I avoid commercial TV, and prefer the BBC's model. However, people seem to think it's reasonable to switch off adverts for a site like Shetlink, but give no thought to the reason they're there in the first place. (Hint: it's not because they're considered stylish and fashionable ) The best solution is for each of us to make a small donation now and again... like £1 or so maybe? EM
Well... you're not going to be able to click on adverts you cannot see, now are you? Clear. My interest was just to find out if the ad business model had changed. I frequently see things I'm interested in...Wow! I really don't think I've ever clicked on any advert on any site out of interest in the product offering. I've only clicked to find out what strategy clearly fallacious ones are using to con. If there are still dodgy ones going then please do highlight these; the quality of the advertising is important.OK will do when I see any. Where would be appropriate? Thread or PM? Time to charge up the pre-paid card again I think.
Fjool
Wow! I really don't think I've ever clicked on any advert on any site out of interest in the product offering.Hehe - maybe I have strange interests but, for example, when I was planning a trip to Aberdeen, I noticed links for places like Permier Inn so, instead of going directly, I went by clicking the advert. There are often mini-games advertised and these can be fun. OK will do when I see any. Where would be appropriate? Thread or PM?That's a good point; I'm not sure if we have a suitable place already. I should check for this. If we can use an existing thread perhaps, to report new ones... Aha! This thread might do the trick for such purposes:http://www.shetlink.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=
Guest Anonymous
Go on... click the Paypal button. Do you really think that Shetlinkers are that stupid?Clicking on anything, including the paypal donation link, is just a way of infecting your computer with crap. Even more crap than the SIC can muster, and that is an extreme statement.
