I think the problem with the acoustic scarers is that the noise travels a very long way underwater. Not sure if it interferes with whales navigation/communication or if they just don't like the noise, but if every fish farm had one there would not be much habitat left for cetaceans because the noise affects such a large area. I've personally kent Jimmy for years, through fishin and parties up in Whalsay and the like. As good hearted a man as you can meet, i wouldnt have anybody sayin any other aboot him.

 

 

Blyde to see him home again. And the buggers who sent him hatemail and threats like it said in the Times, shame on them. It'll be good to see a smile on the family's faces again! i think the whole isle will be blyde to see him back.

Fair enough, but if you want the issue laid to rest, then singing the praises of said clubber on a public thread about seal slaugter may be taking the long route around it.

While it's unlikely that any single cause is responsible for the decline in common seals, it would seem that competition for food supplies with the larger, more numerous grey seal could be a significant factor.

 

So? Seems interestingly ironic that the action of JS, despite being illegal, was indeed beneficial from a conservationist point of view.

Aye. If we want to conserve a few common seals, it may be that some of the grey seals must be culled. Similar to the SNH efforts to help the red squirrels by culling a few grey ones. Heard on Radio Shetland tonight that a new survey says there are far more grey seals in Scotland than previously.
