Roachmill
Is it OK to club anything to death that hampers your own particular line of work, or just seals? If folk don't have the wit to solve problems *responsibly* in their jobs, they should maybe be looking for a less mentally taxing line of work. crofter
What a dreadful report about this in the Shetland Times last week. After naming the alleged seal clubber they go on to say how the population of common seals are declining in Shetland even though it was Grey seals which were killed on East Linga. Are Grey seals declining in Shetland as well? No they are not. Poor, lazy journalism - common seals are not even pupping at this time of year and have no connection to this story. crofter
Wat du u people hav against seals? Yeah sure they eat fish, but humans eat nearly anything...So wat gives them less right to survive then us humans? This is like asking "What do you farmers have against foxes? - sure, they eat a few lambs..."

Shoogler
Well said on many points crofter. A lot of people posting here seem to have got confused as this is nothing to do with salmon farming. I won't go back over the posts because its not worth it, if people choose to ignore the facts and throw mud at fish farmers there's not a lot to be done about it. I totally agree that the ST has indulged in some lazy journalism.
Guest Anonymous
The truth of the matter, and again without going back over posts, is that a lot of people hate Selkies, not just Salmon farmers. In fact Salmon farmers are about the least likely people to harm seals because the Salmon farming industry is so closely scrutinised. To be perfectly honest, there is only one thing that I hate more than Selkies, and that is the people who are constantly harping on that these darned vermin are nice and cuddly. Yes, the damned things are cuddly, but only when their skin is made into a sealskin jacket.
Pooks
I used to own a sealskin jacket. Quite possibly the best jacket I have ever owned. It had an amazing ability to stop any windchill from actually getting to the wearer of the coat. I inherited it from my Great Grandfather and if I knew where it was today it could quite possibly last a few generations yet. Saying all that, I do not condone the killing of selkies without a purpose. I think that many people are misguided (seal lovers and haters alike). Perhaps rather than shooting them he should have been counting them, tagging them and presenting his findings to a body of professionals. He might have then found that he could get paid to cull them rather than be fined for doing so.

Njugle
Well, Aged Erasmus, in blatant off-topic-ism, I feel I have to take issue with that. Is it the seals that are taking the sillocks? It is not so many years since I was told that a survey of seal stomach otoliths suggested that seals didn't even eat much sillocks or piltocks, a fact I find hard to believe, but publicised nonetheless. However, and it is a big 'however', bigger than a big fat stinking Grey selkie on da Catch ebbiestanes, da sillocks have departed fae the sewer mooths and the banks in favour of the salmon 'sea-pens', fattened up with repulsive pink flesh ( that nae auld een wid eat) and and pocked oot for creel bait and offal the length and breadth of the land. Could it be that the pink fish has unwittingly dispatched the black fish too? Save the sillock - re-open the fish factory sewers and save them from their pellet fuelled greed!
