Njugle
Yess, in dees PC times it might be best tae pre-empt da complaints. Burnin yowe? Burnin maa? Burnin coo? Burnin piltock? Den again, if you are pandering tae da PC brigade, it wid need tae be H&S assessed, in which case you wid hae a troup o sober, breathalysed fok haein a procession wearing hi-vis claes aroond da safe confines o da boddam pitch carrying low voltage LED lamps, afore placing them in a responsible and orderly manner around a flame-retardant recycled, solar-power lit galley. Tae hell we da PC bit den, Burnin man it is! In aal seriousness though, Virkie wid be a loveely spot for a seaward burning, or Voe at boddam might be even better! EM
Dis wid be fine, sae lang as the effigy cud be a life laek representation o' da cooncillor ur Cooncil senior Offeshial o' choice.... The concept of burning effigies of people obviously brings to mind the 5th Nov Guy Fawkes bonfire activities. Whenever I have explained this to non-UK people (who generally know nothing about it) they are usually dumbfounded. Indeed I think that quite a few think I am winding them up. It is indeed incredible that such an overtly anti-catholic festival has been going on in such a way.
EM
Den again, if you are pandering tae da PC brigade, it wid need tae be H&S assessed,It is not a matter of pandering. H&S compliance is a fact of life. It is also a myth that the Lerwick UHA in some way doesn't have to bother. It most certainly does. People tend to be somewhat unaware of how H&S works generally, and assume that there are hard and fast rules for specific situations. It is in fact much more about the overall risks for complete systems. The Lerwick UHA is universally considered to be extremely well organised and it has a remarkably clean safety record. This goes a long way, and so it should.

snurtlebug
The Waas Up Helly Aa used to be a full female jarl squad, I was part of it for a couple of years. Also anyone who wanted could be in a squad.
