Brochs

I went. It was very good. Brian has a new theory which I found more convincing than anything else I've heard as to the why and where of brochs. They are not farmhouses or manor houses built to impress the neighbours, they are not castles built to defend against obnoxious neighbours. Instead they form the core of a centrally planned system of strategic defence which covers every voe, beach and sound in Shetland, with others built on prominent hills (ie Culswick, Burland) to act as lookouts and signalling points and larger central bases (ie Clickhimin) which would have been rallying points once the alarm was raised and smaller refuges on islets in lochs in case the system was breached.

Brian will be repeating his talk in mid March but book now as it was already half booked with the overspill from last nights lecture. I would advise you to go, it was excellent.
