crofter
Did anybody go to hear the talk by Brian Smith at the museum last night?
Marooned in Maywick
Mrs Marooned did. She says the transcript of the talk is available on the SMAA website.
ArabiaTerra
I went. It was very good. Brian has a new theory which I found more convincing than anything else I've heard as to the why and where of brochs. They are not farmhouses or manor houses built to impress the neighbours, they are not castles built to defend against obnoxious neighbours. Instead they form the core of a centrally planned system of strategic defence which covers every voe, beach and sound in Shetland, with others built on prominent hills (ie Culswick, Burland) to act as lookouts and signalling points and larger central bases (ie Clickhimin) which would have been rallying points once the alarm was raised and smaller refuges on islets in lochs in case the system was breached. Brian will be repeating his talk in mid March but book now as it was already half booked with the overspill from last nights lecture. I would advise you to go, it was excellent. ArabiaTerra
She says the transcript of the talk is available on the SMAA website.Actually, the .pdf on the SMAA website is only the restaurant menu and the poster advertising the talk. daveh
I went. I should have chosen the fish pie instead of the sausage, mash and egg.
Brian
ArabiaTerra's account of what I said in my paper, above, is spot on. Many thanks. I am giving the lecture again on 18 March, with some amendments based on points that people have made to me, and with improved illustrations.
