The lead singer from one of the 90’s top indie bands ventures north next month for 2 intimate acoustic gigs in the isles.

Chris Helme will play the Northern Lights function room in Brae on Friday 10th April followed by a show at Posers Nightclub in Lerwick on Saturday 11th.

Helme fronted The Seahorses, the band put together by Stone Roses guitar legend, John Squire, from 1996 until they disbanded in 1999.

Although The Seahorses career was brief, the band enjoyed huge commercial success with 2 top 10 singles, most notably their debut 45 Love Is The Law, and a number 2 album with 1997’s Do It Yourself.

Following the demise of The Seahorses, Helme formed a new band called The Yards along with ex-Seahorses bassist Stuart Fletcher and they released their self-titled debut album in 2005.

Last year Helme released his debut solo album entitled Ashes. The album showcased Helme’s love of folk and blues with its sparse production highlighting the singer-songwriters rich vocals and intricate guitar playing.

Providing support for Chris Helme will be 2 of Shetland’s top young singer-songwriters with Antonia Sedgewick opening at the Northern Lights and Jordan Ogg doing the honours at Posers. The Klub Revolution DJ’s will also be on hand to provide after-show entertainment at Posers.

Doors will open at 8pm for both shows and promoters have asked that people attending come early to support the local performers.

The promoters, A Northern Soul, would also like to thank Mark Anderson from Allied Taxis for kindly providing sponsorship for the shows.

Tickets are on sale now from both venues priced at £7.

Gig last night was superb.... I only went because I thought Alan and Joe would be struggling to get a decent turnout... turned out to be a really good gig.

Chris Helme is without a shadow of a doubt the best vocalist to set foot in Shetland for a very long time... not to be missed!

Great to hear the positive responses regarding the 2 Chris Helme gigs last weekend.

He truly was a brilliant performer, not only his mesmerising voice, but also the way he could work an audience with his quick witted banter!

As has also been mentioned, he was a thoroughly decent guy and made plenty of time to speak to everyone after the gigs and sign autographs.

Shetland made a huge impression on him also, he was bowled over by the friendliness and hospitality displayed to him over the weekend by everyone he met.

ANS would like to thank everyone who helped to make the weekend a success especially Alan at the Brae Hotel for organising a venue for us up in Brae and providing pre-show meals and drinks, thanks also to Derek Hendry for providing PA and lights over the weekend and transporting it around at no extra cost. A huge thanks also to Mark Anderson at Allied Taxis for sponsoring the gigs which quite literally helped stop us going bankrupt (again!!).

Once again thanks to Michael Williamson for putting Chris up and providing a venue for the after-show's!!

Another big hand for all the support acts over the weekend who were all brilliant - Antonia Sidgewick in Brae and Jordan Ogg and North Country Fair in Lerwick.

Finally thanks to everyone who turned up and supported the gigs, without punters there's no point in us doing what we do!!

Cheers,

ANS
