No reduction in Bressay Ferry fares this year

She may indeed have fought Bressay's corner - but if it came to a vote and she was outnumbered then so be it....

I think we forget up here though that our fares are pretty heavily subsidised compared to many other parts of the country.

It was announced at the Community Council last month and she said that she had fought for it but I doubt unless you're there to see it we'll never ken how much. I was there to see what the Scottish Water boys had to say about proposed piping of water fae Lerrick to Bressa but that is another matter.........

It was in the Times but wasna exactly front page news that week I think it was about 5 pages in a corner tae itself.

I would suggest coming down to the next Community Council meeting. There were rumblings about writing a letter to the Council but whether that was done or no I'm no sure. (plus most, if not all of them are VERY pro getting a tunnel even afore the decision last year)

Unless there is an opportunity for one less (ticket collecting) crew member to be employed which could save more in a year than the fares take in (and is why charges are not being reinstated on the Bluemull Sound route) I reckon the chances of fares being suspended or reduced on other routes is unlikely.

The Council is already struggling to balance the books in respect of the running costs of its services and if you look at what islanders in Orkney or elsewhere have to pay to use their internal ferries for much less frequent services, you will find that Shetland has it pretty damned good in comparison.

one crew man less means the ferry cant carry so many passengers that cant work on a computers ferry imagine the hastle the crew would get having to leave folk at half eight in the morning when they have to get to work then again these people who are always late (and its always the same ones) might make the effort to be a bit earlier

Looking at the Orkney Inter Island (ie kinda same distance) Fare Structure it seems fairly comparable:

FartyPants couldn't agree wi you more. You would think that it would be common sense to leave plenty of time to catch the ferry wouldn't you? But it does seem to escape some people.......

Orkney charges £21.80 return per vehicle plus £6.80 for the driver

Shetland charges £8.00 per vehicle including driver

How does that seem comparable? Last time I was in Orkney I paid over £32 for a car, myself and two children to go to Hoy (The current fare is £35.40). The equivalent fare in Shetland is £8.80
