Heimdal
Margaret Hunter appears in this pic from the museum/archive collection, on the left, http://photos.shetland-museum.org.uk/index.php?a=wordsearch&s=item&key=Wczo4OiJob3NwaXRhbCI7&pg=
Gaepshot
Does anyone know the origins of this old photo, quite topical I think! http://i640.photobucket.com/albums/uu126/gaepshot/Lorries478.jpg
Heimdal
This was taken about 40 years ago, but where is it ? http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk41/heimdal67/whereat.jpg
Far Haaf
I think you should try asking on the Northmavine Forum. Fairly sure it's in that area.http://northmavine.proboards.com/index.cgi?
SkpprJohnson
^^It might be nesting. No sure
Skyumpi
It's Lunning. The hoose in the background is da Knowes, the roof is aff the peerie wan in the foreground noo, I tink. There are actually two houses aligned in the centre of the picture - you can just make out the two skylights of the one at the rear, just peeping above the ridge of the nearer one. Oddrun
http://photos.shetland-museum.org.uk/image.php?i=87178&r=2&t=4&x=1Is this the same place in the 1930's ???
Far Haaf
I don't want to argue with Skyumpi's local knowledge, but there's something about the picture which just doesn't make sense, eg. the height of the ground in the background.Could be just camera angle.. Best bet would be if Heimdal goeas for a photographic mission to Lunning. Then we can have the 'then and now' pictures.I would love to see more 'then and now' pictures.. filskadacat
You can look it up on street view!! http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=lunning+shetland&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=nl Roof indeed off smaller house and front protrusion / porch bit of main house seems to have lost its pitched roof and now looks a bit odd. But it could very well be the place in the photo.
Ghostrider
^^ Just about the only thing that's not changed is the humps of the hills. This was taken about 40 years ago, but where is it ? http://i277.photobucket.com/albums/kk41/heimdal67/whereat.jpg http://i460.photobucket.com/albums/qq330/Redneck_Hillbilly0504/abc.jpg
filskadacat
^^ Just about the only thing that's not changed is the humps of the hills. Thanks GR - I wasn't clever enough to do that!
Heimdal
Thanks for identifying the location. I'll certainly go to Lunning and try to find the same viewpoint for a 'then' and 'now'. Interesting to see the arable area in the old photo. Much the same throughout Shetland, very little crop-growing now, just sheep everywhere. khitajrah
It would be lovely if someone were to be able to do something like this with some of these old and new photos.
filskadacat
I just thought it was totally amazing that, once someone had suggested the location, thanks to Google having taken its camera so far along a country road, GR could, in the middle of the night, fiddle about until he had an almost perfect 'then and now' shot from the same place! Do people think that the ability to do this is wonderfully enabling or an unwarranted intrusion? Or somewhere in between?
