Like the pictures Frances, surely they are here to stay this time. Serious engineering work in progress this week to get more bandwidth from Sumburgh Head. Plan then is to have several cameras live. There is also an infra-red setup for 24 x 7 viewing. Another new feature is sound ! Yes, you may be able to hear the digestive tract of a Puffin in action ! (other sounds may be avialble). This will all depend on ?$%*? rabbits not chewing the cables.
Dratsy
I see the Shetland amenity trust along with various other funding agencies are giving the lighthouse a £5.4 million refurb then they intend to rent out the accommodation for £450/week high season did anybody even do the simplest of sums for this project it will take 12000 weeks of high season rental to recoup the initial investment. thats 750 years. even if it is rented out every week of the year it will take about 350 years to recoup the initial investment.just what the heck are these folk thinking? While I have no objection to the principle I do wonder why the cost of £5.4 million is so high, could it be that those involved are spending others folks money and there for don't care about the economics of the situation. They are also undercutting private business renting out similar sized accommodation in Shetland.
stilldellin
^ The high costs could be down to working conditions during the development as in a highly hazardous area. Flying norries during the summer and flying piltocks in winter !

MuckleJoannie
There is quite a lot of restoration work being done. Also there will be interpretative features for the lighthouse and the local wildlife. You can see what is planned here. http://www.sumburghhead.com/plans-progress
stilldellin
^ Quote from the site :- Here, when the Visitor Centre is open during the main tourist season, visitors can purchase an entrance ticket, Looks like like there may be a small increase in the existing arrangement then.
