I had been trying to sort out my should be Mother-in-law's christmas baking...she got it in the middle of baking ! I got it, high fever, went home, found both my mum and dad in bed, but got the message from my mother; "There would be no christmas if the kitchen was't cleaned ...I cleaned the kitchen, changed paper in the cupboards..with high fever,,,,. I was 15 at that time...then I found out that my mum had not bought the right kind of icecream for christmas dessert...jumped on my bike ,out in the cold, ,,,,20 minuts tour to the shop, higher fever...got the right ice cream When christmas dinner came on the table, all of us just sat looking at it... ,no one ate anything...my dad measured his temprature, and stated ; If I had known that I was that ill, I would have stayed in bed !!!We all survived !! ArabiaTerra
The age range is what is getting the medical folks nervous 20-40 should be the healthiest and strongest age range. It would be better if it followed the old and young route as they understand it better. Back in the day before panic and insanity took over, and folk relied on simple common sense and logical thought, that would have been taken as a sign that the current outbreak was of a strain with at least some material makup in common the 1969 one. Hence a significant proportion of the over 40's have previously had exposure to a somewhat related strain, and have an enhanced level of resistance to this one as a result. The under 20's faring better than their immediate elders however is the anomoly that doesn't fit, and its impossible to say whether that blows the whole theory out of the water, or is simply because under 20's have been exposed to something that have enhanced their body's natural defences, that their elders haven't.I think the theory they are working with is that the 20-40 y/o's have a stronger immune reaction to the virus, and that's what kills them rather than the virus itself. Ghostrider
^^ Exceptionally radical and outside the box thinking by the medical science community this early in the game, is it not. Almost like they were "expecting" it and had the speil already prepared.... Ooops, my bad, almost slipped right in to conspiritational mode there again.... You gotta admit though, mutate a common virus in such a way that it scams the body's natural defences in to reacting in such an OTT way that they themselves actually do the one thing they are intended to prevent from happening, is about as "perfect" a virus as could be engineered. Medziotojas
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Britain was "among the best prepared countries" to handle an outbreak. Well that's hardly encouraging news.

Njugle
Out of interest: BBC News[/url]"]Each year winter flu kills around 4,000 people in the UK. Globally, between 500,000 and one million people die each year from influenza. That's statisticaslly 1.47/year in Shetland. Out of further interest: The 1918 outbreak of flu killed more people in India alone then the entire sum of deaths from WWI (16,000,000) and caused 70,000,000 deaths worldwide. Apparently. You don't need to mutate a virus to do that, the immune system will attack something it believes to be foreign until it thinks it killed it and even continue to attack after it has. I had a streptoccocal throat infection which lasted three weeks, the bouts of arthritis in my knees, shoulders, wrists and inflammation in my retinas lasted 6 months all from one perfectly normal strep infection and the docs reckoned it was a reasonably normal immune response to a very bad bug. Pig flu is definitely the work of the CIA though
Silvercloud
Hi, Yes I'm concerned too, I do believe all incomming passenger flights from Mexico to the UK should have been quranteed ,yes inconvience ,disruption to those passengers involved but not half much if they been allowed from plane to possibly infect eevryone else There should have been health officals to explain why period quranteen would be necessary until health test proved they are free to carry on their onward journeys. Airports in Mexico should have been shut down .Silvercloud

The really scary bit will come when this latest one makes it to SE Asia, where it could possibly come into contact with and combine with bird flu. Then we could end up with something which spreads like swine flu and kills like bird flu.
paulb
the reason that flights have not been cancelled is very simple it would not work. The bug will get round these blocks. As far as red wine flu. You do get classic symptoms http://gothamist.com/attachments/science_kapil/2006_12_health_hungover.gif now if you suffer any of these please stay at home and don't call the doctor. Red eyes, Banging headache, Feeling sick at the sight of a lovely fry up, furry tongue. Waking up not remembering who or what you are is an indication of the second stage this needs an urgent amount of laughter from your mates.
