BigMouth
Mareel does superb bacon rolls but the lunchtime service is fairly dire with only one person behind the counter at a busy period, meaning queues are long. Lovely staff all the same.

Colin
You would have thought that there would have been a trade-off but, £10.50 for a full fish supper is way to much.

Colin
Don't know about their latest prices but, without a doubt, Frankies is WAY ahead on quality. tlady
zebedee
Frankie's fish is better, but the forts chips are much, much better.
Colin
How about £7.90 for a large "sit in" fish supper inc baked beans and a bread roll?Just paid that in Kirkwall tonight. Last night was a takeaway sausage supper that included a large sausage. Not bad for £3.20The night before was a burger supper for £2.70 Beginning to think that some people are taking the p*ss

Colin
http://www.shetnews.co.uk/newsbites/10871-late-night-chippy-assault I know that chip suppers are getting pretty expensive but, I wonder if someone was the victim of an attempted "chip mugging" ? BigMouth
I was in the Olive Tree this morning and ignoring £1.40 for a (eat in) custard tart, which seemed a bit much, I got to thinking about the coffee available around the big city. My latte needs to be hot, in a clean mug, of decent strength, with a long spoon and extra points for sweeteners being available. Olive Tree - Good on all points, but wasn't given a spoon.Mareel - Tepid, weak, depth of coffee = length of spoon. Buy longer spoons!Peerie Cafe - Weak on occasion, could be hotter, decent mugs, too much froth.Koffee + Keetchin - Very weak coffee.Havely - Good coffee, no sweeteners.Bonhoga - Good on all points, but not in the big city.Peerie Fine Cakes - OK, go for the cakes.Emma-Louise - Weak.Museum - Reasonable. IMHO you can't beat the Olive Tree for a decent cup of coffee, that has been consistently good, except for one over-froth occasion, whoever makes it. Havely is in 2nd place. More sweeteners, less howling kids please! Peerie cafe would be in 3rd place, perhaps I just need to ask them to heat it up a bit more! Best out of town is Bonhoga. They make consistently good coffee. What seems to help is if there is a person dedicated to making drinks and not serving otherwise, and this is where Mareel falls down. The poor sap serving you is usually making the drinks too. With a long queue they seem to feel motivated to get the drink made quickly. Fine if it is a tea bag in hot water from the boiler, little use if you need milk heating for a coffee..
mogling
Bigmouth have you ever been to Islesburgh Cafe ?Ok its been a while fae I was in there last, but they certainlyused to do an excellent latte, and you got one o thosepeerie sweetie biscuit chocolate rolls with it too! I liked their wraps, and their soups. And the cake…
Staney Dale
Islesburgh is quite good - it's not a proper barrista coffee machine, it is an automatic contraption that does everything for them but that is all to the good as there is less to go wrong. Agree pretty much with all your opinions Bigmouth, can add that Fjara's coffee is disappointing too. Olive Tree's Bakewell Tart is nice.
zebedee
I think £1.40 for an eat-in tart is very reasonable.
zebedee
Most of the coffee places use machines supplied by the same person, as far as I know - and they also provide the training. Maybe they prefer weaker coffee..
