Moving the Hearts Memorial

Recommended Posts

Meh, its not like anyone's buried underneath it.

Times like these I'm glad I live in Glasgow

That has to be the first and only time in the history of human beings and Glasgow that someone has said that.

Ever.

Ever.

Duncan Currie

John Allan

James Boyd

Tom Gracie

Ernest Ellis

James Speedie

Henry Wattie

Those were the 7 of 16 who volunteered who didn't come back

That has something to do with the bodies of some of them are buried in a foreign land after fighting for their country, right enough they wouldn't have been buried beneath the memorial anyway.

Meh hopefully folk won't so casually dimiss your memory.

Not that that ever stopped development and "progress" anyway. They tarred over the original Lerwick Kirkyard to make the Church Road carpark, parts of the Masonic Hall was allegedly built over graves, it was a kirk, that was built around and over a smaller kirk already on the site. Folk are allegedly buried under at least one of the porches of the Ness Kirk. Some old ancestor of mine that was Press Ganged was buried in a swamp in Jamaica - its now the site of the main runway of one of Jamaica's International Airports, god knows what they did with his brucks when it built it. He's maybe under the tar yet, cursing vehmently at every Boeing that gives him a dunt on the head as it lands.

MOVING FATHER'S GRAVE

They're moving father's grave to build a sewer

They're moving it regardless of expense.

They're moving his remains to lay down nine-inch drains

To irrigate some rich bloke's residence.

Now what's the use of having a religion?

If when you're dead you cannot get some peace

'Cause some society chap wants a pipeline to his tank

And moves you from your place of rest and peace...

Now father in his life was not a quitter

And I'm sure that he'll not be a quitter now.

And in his winding sheet, he will haunt that privy seat

And only let them go when he'll allow.

Now won't there be some bleedin' consternation,

And won't those city toffs begin to rave!

But it's no more than they deserve,

'cause they had the bleedin' nerve

To muck about a British workman's grave.
