Malachy
9 degrees colder than Alaska this morning.Well, maybe if you mix up fareinheit and celcius 14 degrees fareinheit today in the city of Fairbanks - that's -10 celcius. It was -24 celcius last night. Nippy!
RFR937
I have a weather station at my hoose in Eastvoe in Scalloway , the temperatures here are way lower than the met office claim , it was -11.8C this morning around 0700hrs , even looking into the eastvoe you can see how cold it is with the voe frozen fron one side to the other , it's thick enough for a flock of birds to march about on top of it . Have wondered if the staion reads the correct temp but most of the car thermometers in the area seem to confirm my readings .

Temperature readings can only be compared directly with one an other if they have been made using the same standard method of exposure e.g. Meteorological stations measure the temperature of the air using accurately tested thermometers placed in a Stevenson Screen between 1.25 and 2m above the ground. Taking temperature readings that do not conform to this standard exposure will often give quite different results. Anyhow temperatures will vary quite a lot across Shetland due to differences topography, height above sea level, radiative cooling, cold air drainage etc

Guest Anonymous
Taking temperature readings that do not conform to this standard exposure will often give quite different results. but when the various methods all agree, all except the met office of course. Then you have to wonder if someone is making an muckle sphincter of it or maybe even telling porkies.

The Met Office are meticulous in their temperature data collection, using internationally standardised methods. They will be doing it properly and they are not lying. Relying on in-car temperature readouts is not reliable.
PJ of Hildisvik
Clear skys up Hillswick area overnight, the temperature at Punds Water this morning was minus 10.
ArabiaTerra
Just a heads-up. Right now (04:43), Lerwick is frozen. I mean really, seriously deep frozen. I just had to go out for a short walk (don't ask!), and I have never seen as much ice. Roads, pavements, everything that might have had a sheen of damp on it is frozen solid. There is very light snow being blown around by a stiff Northerly breeze, this snow is covering the ice. If you are driving this morning in the Lerwick area, be very careful._________________
