The news of shetland footy player arrested for being drunk. I dont think he should be made a spectacle of, he was maybe letting off steam, after all proffessional players do a lot worse.

The reports I've heard said that he was arrested 'for his own safety'.

On another note, I don't think the Shetland FA president acquitted himself very well on Radio Shetland tonight. I'm not able to quote verbatim, but when listening to it I was of the mind that he could give Gordon Smith a run for his money.

What a piece of nonsense.

The SIGA are always anti football and can't wait to get stuck into the footballers over nothing.

Always sly digs about the footballers - how they would have to behave themselves and singling them out.

The footballers have hardly any time to enjoy the other events, they are usually playing a game, training, preparing for a game or recovering from a game. You have one day off in the middle of it when you probably get together and train anyway. By the time you have finished your event the island games is near enough over.

The only chance they have to let their hair down is the last night.

Some of the other sports are finished earlier in the week and they have the rest of the week to unwind and relax.

These boys have worked hard training for months for the games then play 4 games in 5 days.

All of a sudden it's over- everything they have worked for, all they could think about for months is finished and so are the games.

What do you do?

Go out together as a team. The group of players that you have shed blood, sweat and tears with and enjoy what's left.

That's what I would do.

It's not like they had a game the next day it was the closing ceremony of the 'Friendly Games' and to me part of that is to socialise with other competitors and create friendships.

The Two Scottish professionals, well this bears no comparison. They were in the middle of a campaign preparing for the next game. They had a slap on the wrist then threw it back in everyone's face with a blatant childish planned V-sign spat.

As for Peter Peterson, as a footballer he is an excellent versatile player who has consistently performed at the top of Shetland football for many a year and has been involved in countlesss games for Shetland playing in all positions on the park. He has been there and done it and would have been a greatly experienced player to have in the squad.

code of conduct - He didn't rape no one, smash any windows, beat anybody up. He had a kip outside; big bloody deal. Some cops thought he might do better on a mattress and put him up for the night, good on them , very thoughtful of them. NO CHARGE means he was not a problem to them; I bet he said thanks to them in the morning. If he had a few that's up to him, he's over 18.

The most embarrassing thing for Shetland about it is having to read the comments by Dusty Rhodes & 69bman on here.

I only hope that when your soap box does collapse, you hit every splinter on the way down. Until then I refer you to a higher power.

You're such a saint, that ain't the way we see you

I have to say when I first heard about this I thought it was all blown out of proportion, an individual being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And like Marshall says, other sports/squads having a gleeful dig at the football squad who (I await the backlash!) they are all jealous of at the end of the day (in terms of importance and column inches i mean!).

However, having spoken to various people, fans and competitors alike (including one of the footballers) even I am ashamed of the behaviour of the footballers. I feel sorry for Joe because at the moment he seems to have been singled out, but there are several players who have acted pretty disgracefully and although I voted that there shouldn't be lifetime bans, I think those most culpable should get banned for the rest of the season, certainly at County level and perhaps club level too.

For those that know me, I know that I can't talk about getting pished up and having a carry on either in Lerwick on a Sat night or away on fitba trips, lads holidays etc. but you should know when enough is enough. These guys are representing Shetland and should respect their teamates (by this I mean the whole games squad) and their hosts. Fair enough having a good night out after the Saremaa game but from what i'm hearing it was a 3 day bender with some poor scenes at the closing ceremony and airport. It just sounds like their is a lack of cohesion and respect in the squad and the manager and senior players now need to set a firm example to the rest of the current squad and any other younger players that may get into it in the future.

yes i agree with u stoichkov. every day more ppl are asking about it and saying mayb somthin should be done about it. as i commented on before, it all comes from the top. maybe players dont respect the management? but then maybe that'll grow in time to come. but then again... being a delting management team will they ever get the respect that the shetland management team should get?! ... probably not! i still think to this day, the decision to appoint a manager managing at club level and county level was a big mistake! but thats getting away from the point... i could rant all day/nite about that topic!

i hope for joe, its not the end of his shetland chances. yes i believe some of them should be punished, say banned for the upcoming inter county match. but nothing more as that. to miss out on a match like that infront of a homecrowd is punishing enough.

as for u ppl who are firm peter peterson fans. maybe if he is such an embassador to shetland football then he should take up his coach role and try earn some respect from the players. clearly the respect is out the window at the moment and him pulling on the left back jersey and getting rinsed most games against decent opposition is hardly doing himself any favours now is it?!!

For christs sake speak about makin a mountain out of a mole hill.

Nobody did anybody any harm. The boys had trained and fundraised all winter, and put in a big effort and some of them had not touched drink for 5-6 weeks prior to the games. So why when they had played 4 games in 5 days should they not go out an have a few drinks as a team to unwind. As for banning players, whit a lot of S***e! There is few enough players willing to put in time and effort to train and fundraise so lets get behind the team for the county instead of trying to make something controversial out of nothing.

Do you think the Shetland football squad were the only people to have trained, fund-raised, been in bed by ten every night and abstained from alcohol for months??

Do you think the Shetland football squad were the only ones to have been very very busy that week?

Do you think the Shetland football squad were the only ones to have had a poor result despite their best efforts?

If they absolutely had to 'unwind' in such a fashion they could've waited one more day until they were home and no longer representing our Island.

Joe should not be banned. Other players in the squad should not be banned.

Should they be battered over the head with the code of conduct that they signed - yes.

Should they have to work extra hard to keep their place in the squad - yes.

Should they be banned if they act like that again - yes.

It is important to remember though, that the majority of the football squad were well behaved. Perhaps as a team building exercise the whole squad should be punished (extra push-ups, extra laps, extra bag-packing at the coop, whatever). That way next time the squad may look after the individuals.

Why should he not be banned and come to that why should others in the team not be looking at a ban as well? I know he's probably feeling like crap over all this attention but if a lesson has to be learned then take away his place in the team for a few games. There are plenty of players in Shetland who would love a tryout/call up to represent Shetland. And if as you say make the team fundraise as punishment I for one will not be putting money into anything to enable them to go on a piss up at some of my expense.

At the end of the day some people enjoy having a bevvy to unwind wether it be 2 pints or 15 pints and some people don't which I think sometimes gives the latter the upperhand in any argument or discussion when it comes to issues such as this post!

The boy did no harm to anyone so live and let live!

Just another point, after todays cup final, how many of the players, winners or losers do you think will be going to the pub after the game today and having a good scoop of booze and enjoying their night out? What happens if one of them ends up sleeping under a tree or up a lane harming no-one, does he bring shame on his club, town or village he lives in?

Cheers and have a good weekend wether your boozing or watching Jordan at 9pm (ITV) :D

As these boys seem to be getting very little defense I thought I had better speak up on their behalf.

Are the end of games celebrations not just that? A celebration? Did they end up breaking another teams noses? No?

So why all the hardship? Yes it would have been better if the police hadn't been involved, but had they not then would we have even heard of this?

These guys went out and did their best for Shetland. They didn't have to. They had a few beers afterwards and got into a bit of a state. Looking around the cross at the weekend I think these guys deserved to have a few beers.

No harm was done.

I maybe don't know the full story but as far as I am concerned these guys went out and tried to enjoy themselves after having a tough time qualifying, training, fund-raising, playing and losing.

Give the guys a break.
