DT Wobblers

I love the fact that this thread has had 33 views and no replies - until now. It's almost as if the world has been struck dumb by such seismic news. Either that or nobody gives a toss.

I do give a toss however, as I'm proud to have been one of the several hundred people who turned out for this footballing behemoth. The mighty 'cherry-reds' have left an indelible (skid) mark on the face of Shetland football forever. Who can forget that 17-0 thrashing at the hands of Whalsay, after goalkeeper Steven Leask revealed he'd forgotten his contact lenses as the ferry docked at Symbister? I will toast the passing of the good ship Wobbler with a pint of vimto this evening.

I can't believe it's over.

Their passing is regrettable. I have (somewhere) a VHS video of a vintage Wobblers match at Click North. Before I taped the footage, the cassette had a label marked: 'The Nazis: a warning from history'. 'Nazis' was scrubbed out and replaced with 'Wobblers'! Whats my highest bid??!!!!

Is this the classic 'bloopers' edition with various hilarious moments including ball being kicked into loch, and dog almost running onto the pitch? Jeremy Beadle would give his right hand for such material.

So, what's the real reason for the demise of the infamous cherry-reds? Was there an aborted coup to depose Wobblers tyrant/manager-for-life, Andy 'The Vulture' Walterson?

  • 2 weeks later...

Half of last year's treble winning team wanted to play at a higher level, the other were happy where they were at. The vulture had also been told by his doctor to take it easy. A shortage of players and no manager sadly meant that the Wobblers were unable to take the field for what would have been their 13th season.

It would never be fair to knock the Wobblers...the only Works League team to form a junior team (which went on to win the junior championship), the only Works League team to enter the county shield as a matter of principle (despite the 17-0 drubbing by Whalsay, there were also close defeats against Whitedale (3-1), Whalsay (4-2) and Thistle (3-0)).

The Wobblers were also the first Shetland team to set up a website. Until unpaid bills caused its demise a few weeks back, it was still one of the funniest/best websites in Shetland. Despite the disclaimer (ie. notification that anything posted on it was likely to be complete piss take) it still managed to get right up the noses of those it liked to mock.

In the last two season, the cherry reds won 5 of the 6 trophies available to them (a shocking refereeing display cost them the 6th! ) so at least they are bowing out at the top. Look out for a Former Player's Association coming your way soon!!!
