A techy friend of mine on another forum was recommending this

Just wondering if any of the techy freinds here had seen or used it or similar?

 

from what he says it doesn't increase your bandwidth but makes the way your browser uses the web more effecient. Im always weary when i hear such claims hence why i pose the question here.

It really depends on your DNS servers. If they're really slow then it can make a difference. It's also a way to get round (some) overly protective ISPs that block certain domain names.

 

The main problem with OpenDNS is though that the NDS servers can change addresses from time to time... or it used to be in the dim and distant past anyway.

OpenDNS works really well. It is worth trying if the first few hops on a traceroute are looking slow to you. It is also handy if your ISP's DNS goes out the window. IIRC they have an option for a filtered version now as well which is handy if you have kiddies.

 

Use it if it works faster for you, don't if it doesn't. You could always enter your ISP as primary DNS and OpenDNS as secondary as a backup.

I've been using them for awhile now, starting one day when (our ISP) Virgin's DNS service was in a really foul mood, taking ages to find some addresses and completely failing with a timeout on others. The improvement in speed with OpenDNS was very noticeable - and that when compared with the ISP's usual speed, not the 'bad day' speed. Haven't looked back since, so here's one 'highly recommended' from a satisfied user.
