British and American Film Industries

Recommended Posts

Right, since the title of this thread is American "movies" versus British "films", how do you think the two compare? Whit aboot the British Film industry? It's such a treat when a really good British film comes out, but it is so rare. It's like a chocolate box, with only one of the type you really like amongst a mass of other also-rans.

Thinking of classic Mike Leigh British films, and so many you'll be able to mention, why do you think, there aren't more made? It's strange to me, when the quality can be so excellent. The reason I've seen stated is that there isn't enough funding, but I wonder why, when it can be such a lucrative business, that there isn't more funding directed that way.

Most of the British talent (actors, producers, directors) are responsible for some of the best stuff to come out of Hollywood, so I guess we can take credit for that.

It would be nice if we could get away from period drama, London gangster nonsense or endless Hugh Grant films in which a flustered posh chap apologizes his way through 2 hours of celluloid.

Did anybody else see "Very Annie Mary" a totally unique and ludicrous but brilliant Welsh film on late last night?

Me n Distortio couldna believe how weird it was.

It starts with a man in a Pavarotti mask, driving a baker's van down a Welsh mountainside, while singing opera, broadcast via a microphone and megaphones on the van roof.

He then goes home and gives his grown-up daughter a cabbage for her birthday present, while she tucks into half a lemon for her tea.

And it just goes on from there. . . . .

I was in tears by the end! Excellent, original British film!
