peeriebryan
John Shuttleworth (A.K.A. comedian Graham Fellows), the Sheffield born singer/songwriter/organist has just finished making a film about Shetland calld "It's nice up North" Guardian Unlimited - 'The further north you go, the nicer it gets' http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-images/Film/Pix/pictures/2006/04/20/north372.jpg Apparently, Mr Fellows fell in love with Shetland when he was up here performing at the Garrison Theatre during the John Shuttleworth "Pillock of the Community" show in 2003 (the funniest comedy show I've ever seen) He returned to make a documentary to test his theory that poeple get nicer the further North you go "I fell in love with the wind, and the moonscape, and the barren scenery." And the people. "We went to this bus shelter in Unst. It's this amazing bus stop that has a sofa and a budgie in a cage and a computer and a microwave. It's like someone's lounge. And it struck me this sort of thing wouldn't survive five minutes in mainland Britain. It would be trashed by disaffected youths." And so an idea for a film took shape. "It seemed to me a perfect symbol of niceness, the sort of niceness we'd been experiencing that whole week. I began to think that, the further north you go, the nicer it gets." You can see the trailer here - http://www.shuttleworths.co.uk/moviesproject/nice.html The trailer features locals including Abby Tushkar, Smirk, Davie Gardener, Phil Danardo, Elma Johnson and locations including the Market Cross, Harbour Cafe and Scalloway Scord The John Shuttleworth is currently on tour with the film on the UK mainland, but he'll be in Shetland shortly. I highly recommend going to see this film!!! Fifi
It sounds really good. Is there any way us Scottish mainland ex-pats can get to see it?Is it as much of a piss-take of Shetland/remote-up-north-backwater-places as it sounds from the Guardian review? muddybay-kyebeoy
I had a pint with Mr Fellows after da Glasgow showing in March and he said that there was far more laughter at that show than any of the previous Shetland showings. As a Shetlander, I did not feel it was a piss-take in any way. It's going to be on sale very soon I believe on DVD either from his website and amazon etc I'm sure he said.
